要解决的问题
Re-introduce smart meters after the pandemic and explain why an invisible piece of tech matters, made Covid-safe, for a national audience.
The idea
Frame the smart meter rollout as a 'quiet revolution': Britain's homes carry on as normal while a humble box under the stairs upgrades the energy system.
如何实现
Hero films open on quiet observed moments in homes across Britain, revealing each has a smart meter working away under stairs or behind cupboard clutter, helping toward carbon neutrality by 2050. TV and online from August 13, 2020, plus four shorter digital films, Gravity Road meme-like social content, an H+K Strategies PR push in September, and £6 million of media through November planned by PHD.
产生的效果
Ran as a £6 million multi-channel campaign — TV, national press, magazines, radio, YouTube and social — through November 2020; Smart Energy GB marketing director Chris Taggart said the work dramatised the household revolution in energy use, from electrified heating to charging electric cars at home.
背景
In August 2020, following the pandemic, Smart Energy GB re-introduced smart meters with 'The Quiet Revolution', a campaign by AMV BBDO. The idea: a digital revolution is happening across the nation, and like other revolutions it will change things for the better — but in the most uniquely British way, everyday life carries on without fuss or fanfare.
The hero films open with a voiceover announcing a quiet revolution, then show quiet, observed moments in homes up and down Britain — where a humble smart meter is working away in the background, hidden under stairs or tucked behind clutter in a cupboard. The films reveal the dramatic ways these boxes upgrade the energy system and help achieve carbon neutral status by 2050.
The work broke on television and online on August 13, 2020, backed by national press, magazines, radio, YouTube and social. AMV BBDO also made four shorter digital films on specific benefits such as saving money, Gravity Road developed meme-like social posts and cinemagraphs with real smart meter advocates, and an H+K Strategies PR campaign followed in September. Media spend was £6 million through November, planned and bought by PHD.
为什么有效
Smart meters are hidden, boring hardware, so the campaign made their invisibility the story rather than fighting it.
The pandemic reset household attention, giving Smart Energy GB a moment to re-introduce the technology nation-wide.
The 'quietly British' framing turned a national infrastructure programme into entertainment instead of a government-style lecture.
Multiple audience categories, including pre-pay meter customers, were targeted with tailored social content at the right time and place.
可以借鉴什么
For infrastructure nobody notices, the insight is the drama: declare a revolution, then show that nothing looks different — that is the point.

The campaign ran through November 2020 across TV, press, radio, YouTube and social, with the PR phase highlighting how individual small actions aggregate into national carbon reduction.
