要解决的问题
Melbourne Museum's exhibition 'Vikings: Beyond the Legend', a collaboration with the Swedish History Museum, covers domestic life, religion, death rituals, craftsmanship and raiding-and-trading culture — and needed a campaign to match its nuance.
The idea
A myth-busting campaign, built on a custom typeface with the museum's studio, correcting the Viking record with light-hearted fact-checks
如何实现
Yoke, Museums Victoria's lead agency since 2016, researched and cross-checked the popular myths, then built the campaign around demystifying them: Vikings as farmers, merchants, artisans and explorers — 'the women as fierce and powerful, their craftsmanship and love of good hair and hygiene'. A custom typeface was developed with the museum's Design Studio across a TVC launching April, print and media advertising, museum signage and OOH.
产生的效果
No attendance figures are reported; the campaign reframed the exhibition's pitch from spectacle to correction — matching the museum's educative role.
背景
Vikings in popular culture: a bunch of bearded, dirty, horn-helmeted barbarians. The archaeological record: a much more nuanced and refined people — farmers, merchants, artisans and explorers. That gap was the brief for Melbourne-based agency Yoke's campaign for 'Vikings: Beyond the Legend', Museums Victoria's exhibition with the Swedish History Museum, offering real insight into Viking domestic life, religion, death rituals, craftsmanship, and raiding and trading culture.
Yoke — appointed in 2016 as Museums Victoria's lead agency across Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum and Scienceworks — began with significant research, cross-checking facts and identifying the myths people still believe. The entire concept revolved around demystifying them, said key account director Pauline Dellit: 'showing Vikings as they truly were — the women as fierce and powerful, their craftsmanship and love of good hair and hygiene'.
The campaign comprised creative ideation and production of a TVC launching April 2018, plus design of print and media advertising, museum signage and out-of-home, using a typeface developed in collaboration with the museum's own Design Studio.
为什么有效
The campaign's enemy is a pop-culture image, which gives every execution a clear job: correct it.
A bespoke typeface makes the correction feel curated, not clip-art Viking.
A light-hearted tone keeps the education marketable to families without trivialising the scholarship.
可以借鉴什么
When your subject contradicts pop culture, make the contradiction the campaign — correction is a curiosity engine.
