After a year of building a highly recognisable communication platform, the challenge was to introduce a new miniature format and prove a smaller bottle could carry the same relevance and impact as the original.

Break out-of-home's first rule: instead of blowing the product up, install it at actual size — so small that passersby need binoculars to find it.

A takeover on Paseo de la Reforma installed a billboard with the Modelito at its real, tiny size — turning the product's dimensions into the campaign's trigger. Under the concept 'Modelito Makes It Special', the size becomes the reason the smallest moments take on meaning: an invitation to come back to the present and find the extraordinary in everyday pauses.

The takeover opened a communication platform set to roll out across further media and formats; no engagement or sales figures were reported.

Cerveza Modelo introduced Modelito, the newest — and smallest — innovation in its portfolio, with a campaign developed with GUT Mexico City. The premise: the smallest things can bring people back to the present and make everyday moments special.

The launch began with a takeover on Paseo de la Reforma that broke one of out-of-home's established rules. Instead of enlarging the product to be visible from a distance, the billboard showed Modelito at its actual size — so small that passersby needed binoculars to spot it. 'Everyone expects the product to appear huge when it's launched. We saw an opportunity to do exactly the opposite,' said Jose Mario Munoz, ECD of GUT Mexico City. 'Sometimes, breaking the logic is the best way to get people's attention.'

The execution opened the 'Modelito Makes It Special' platform, which turns the bottle's size into the reason even the smallest moments gain meaning — inviting Mexicans distracted by busy lives to come back down to earth. Rodolfo Vargas, premium brands director at Grupo Modelo, framed the launch as portfolio expansion for evolving preferences: 'the best moments aren't always the biggest ones.'

The media buy was the message: a miniature bottle launched at miniature scale, instantly legible as a rule-break.

Binoculars made strangers participate — hunting for the bottle is a pause in the street, which is exactly the behaviour the product sells.

It resolved the brand problem directly: proving a smaller bottle could carry the same impact as the icon, by inverting the medium that made the icon big.

The platform gave the stunt a durable meaning — presence and everyday moments — instead of leaving it a one-off gag.

When the product news is a downgrade in size, stage the launch at the exact scale of the problem — the smallest billboard in town makes smallness the story.

As of the August 4, 2026 report, the Paseo de la Reforma takeover marked the start of a platform set to continue across different media and formats. No campaign performance figures were reported.
