A company-wide brand initiative, 'Smarter Homes For All', to show how smart home technology offers real benefits to Britain's homes and make it accessible to all, launching on TV on 25 March 2017 on Channel 4.

Wilbur the Penguin and his penguin friends fan out across Britain — windy hilltops to suburban streets — delivering smart meters and connected products to ordinary homes.

Nexus Studios directors Smith & Foulkes brought Wilbur and friends to life, creating over 50 fur-and-feather-covered characters and the environments for their quest. The film closes with a tired mother using the Hive app to dim lights and turn down heating without waking her newborn. Supported by brand radio, digital OOH at London St Pancras, DRTV, radio and PR through 7 May.

The launch carried hard business context: British Gas led the smart meter rollout with over 3 million in homes, and its Connected Home business nearly doubled its customer base in a year to over 400,000 homes, expanding beyond heating with Hive Active Light, Hive Sensors and Hive Active Plug.

On Saturday 25 March 2017, British Gas unveiled 'Smarter Homes For All', a multi-discipline brand initiative devised by CHI&Partners to show how smart home technology offers real benefits — making it accessible to all, illustrated with real-life situations. The TV launch ran on Channel 4 until 7 May, backed by brand radio, a digital out-of-home launch at London's St Pancras station, DRTV, radio and a PR programme.

The initiative starred Wilbur the Penguin: in the inaugural advert, Wilbur and his penguin friends set off around the UK — from windy hilltops to suburban streets — delivering smart meters and connected products, with the film concluding on a tired mother using her Hive app to dim the lights and turn down the heating without waking her newborn baby.

Nexus Studios and directors Smith & Foulkes built the world, creating over 50 fur and feather covered characters and the multitude of environments the quest required. Head of Marketing Miriam Jordan Keane framed the ambition: as British homes get smarter, people become more attached to them — with British Gas 'at the forefront of the smart home technology movement'.

The mascot does the explaining: penguins waddling door-to-door make smart-meter installation feel like a quest, not a contractor visit.

The closing scene sells the benefit in one image — quieting a house without waking a baby — instead of listing features.

Storytelling scale (50+ hand-built characters) gave the campaign craft authority and reuse across TV, radio and OOH.

The campaign arrived as the business proof point landed: 3 million smart meters installed and a Connected Home base nearly doubled year on year.

Explaining a technology beats admiring it: a platoon of hapless helpers turns installation logistics into a story anyone can follow.

The campaign ran from 25 March to 7 May 2017 across TV, radio, digital OOH, DRTV and PR. (British Gas later retired the penguin mascot in 2020 for real-family films, per the library's separate entry.) No campaign-specific results were reported.
