要解决的问题
Conventional cockpits mount the gauges behind the steering wheel. Tesla and Volvo had already jettisoned the central instrument cluster, and BMW's own Neue Klasse concept from a few years ago showed a calm, clean cabin that its production cars had not yet matched.
The idea
Delete the instrument cluster: driving data runs as a thin strip across the top of the dashboard, inside the driver's field of view but never blocking the road.
如何实现
Vital data spreads across a dash-top Panoramic Vision strip. Because drivers no longer read gauges through the wheel, the wheel gains a chunky spoke at 12 o'clock (mirrored at 6) — rarely seen on a production car. Controls follow a 'shy-tech' principle: driver-assistance and parking controls illuminate only when available, infotainment controls give haptic feedback, and functions are partitioned so drivers keep their eyes on the road. The central touchscreen is a driver-angled 'free-cut' parallelogram with its pointiest corners lopped off, and widgets can be dragged from it onto the strip.
产生的效果
The eighth-generation 3 Series launches in early 2027. Center and front-passenger content can be personalized and viewed by all occupants. No sales results yet — the cockpit itself is the announcement.
背景
BMW has unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, the first volume model to wear its Neue Klasse design language, and the exterior's calm, clean lines are only half the story. The cockpit is the radical departure: as Tesla and Volvo have done, BMW has jettisoned the central instrument cluster, moving vital driving data into what it calls Panoramic Vision — a thin strip running across the top of the dashboard.
'Driving information appears clearly within the driver's field of view without obstructing the road ahead,' the company says; content in the center and front-passenger areas can be personalized and viewed by all occupants. Because the driver no longer looks through the wheel to read gauges, the designers added a chunky spoke at the 12 o'clock position, mirrored by one at 6 — a feature Core77's Rain Noe writes he has never seen on a production car — plus beefy gripping surfaces at the sides.
The rest of the wheel follows BMW's 'shy-tech' principle: controls on the left for driving assistance and parking functions are illuminated only when available, infotainment controls provide haptic feedback, and the clear partitioning into assistance, parking and infotainment functions is meant to allow safe, intuitive operation without taking eyes off the road. The central touchscreen leans toward the driver in a 'free-cut' parallelogram shape with the pointiest corners cut away, and drivers can drag-and-drop widgets from it onto the Panoramic Vision strip.
为什么有效
It is a real product decision with visible consequences: deleting the binnacle reshapes the steering wheel itself, a geometry change rarely shipped on a production car.
The shy-tech detail — controls that appear only when usable — attacks cockpit clutter at the interface level rather than by adding another screen.
It marks the moment BMW's Neue Klasse concept language reaches its volume model rather than a halo car, which is where the design actually has to pay for itself.
可以借鉴什么
Redesign by subtraction: remove the fixture everyone designs around, and the geometry of everything left — wheel spokes, screen shapes, control logic — has to reinvent itself.
后续
The new 3 Series launches in early 2027, and Core77 expects 'a rash of influencer videos showing us how the cockpit works' once it ships. The main open question is the drag-and-drop interaction between the central screen and the strip, which is hard to judge without video of the procedure.
