WERO Smart Case reorganizes first aid by injury type — Red Dot Best of the Best 2026

A first-aid kit color-coded by injury type that opens one-handed, so a panicked bystander finds the right item — Red Dot Best of the Best 2026.

What it had to solve

First aid is usually performed by untrained people under time pressure and stress, and classic kits force users to search and rearrange contents. WERO asked Puls Produktdesign to make every interaction immediately understandable, even when the first-aider is overwhelmed.

How it works

The WERO Smart Case is a first-aid kit designed for the worst moment it will ever be used: an emergency, by someone untrained, under time pressure. WERO GmbH and Puls Produktdesign set out to make every interaction immediately understandable, so the kit guides its user instead of explaining.

The solution is a case organized by injury type and color-coded throughout. It detaches from its wall mount and opens with one hand; contents stand upright so nothing has to be searched for or rearranged; and a graphic inside the lid is a mirror image of the layout, functioning as an instant, intuitive manual. Even the aesthetics were treated seriously, combining the rationality of a medical product with the emotional appeal of an everyday object for modern workplaces.

The Red Dot jury named it Best of the Best 2026, citing the clear structure, intuitive organisation and precise workmanship, and noting that people without prior knowledge can use the kit safely. The project shows that in critical moments, design should not explain but provide guidance.

Why it lands

  • It reorganized first aid around the user's panic rather than medical taxonomy, so the right item is found by color and position.
  • One-hand detachment and opening remove obstacles at the exact moment fine motor control fails.
  • The lid graphic works as a mirror-image manual, turning documentation into part of the product itself.
  • It applied serious design to an ignored category and proved utilitarian objects can be rethought end to end.

What it did

Won Red Dot: Best of the Best 2026; the jury praised the clear structure, intuitive organisation and precise workmanship, saying people without any prior knowledge can use the kit safely, and that the design eliminates the burden of decision-making.

What you can take

When stress removes judgment, the object must think for the user: color coding, hierarchy and one-hand operation prevent errors more reliably than any manual.

Since then

Red Dot featured the Smart Case in its magazine and designer interview series, and WERO positioned the kit for workplaces, where first aid is most likely to be performed by untrained colleagues. The jury comment framed it as a model for guiding users in high-pressure moments, and the project has become a reference point for emergency-product design.
