Bürstner Signature: an interior that actively changes the room — Red Dot BoB 2026
Instead of a fixed floor plan, Bürstner's Signature uses sliding and pivoting furniture to turn one 7.2m volume into lounge, bath and bedroom.
Bürstner GmbH & Co. KG
What it had to solve
Sub-3.5-tonne semi-integrated motorhomes can be parked and driven like vans, but owners pay with a fixed floor plan — bathroom, lounge, kitchen and beds compete for the same 7.2 metres, so every room is usually a compromise.
How it works
Semi-integrated motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes drive and park like everyday vans, but their size forces a fixed floor plan in which bathroom, lounge, kitchen and beds all fight for the same few metres. Bürstner's brief for a new premium range was to give that class the liveability of a much larger motorhome without growing the vehicle.
The design team's answer was to stop thinking about a classic vehicle layout and start from how occupants actually use the space. The Signature is not built on a rigid structure but on an open, adaptive spatial concept: each function is designed to actively change the room, so the same volume can host different activities at different times of day.
Execution centres on moving furniture. A patented sliding wall converts the toilet room into a generous shower with a single handle; a patented rotating bench pivots two seats to create a face-to-face dining lounge; a deployable divider separates the galley from the rear bedroom while cooking; and an optional front bed disappears flat into the ceiling, preserving 198cm of standing height.
The approach earned the Signature the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026 top distinction 'Best of the Best' — its fifth design award after recognition in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. Industry reviewers described it as the model that deletes the division between camper vans and motorhomes, and it became the flagship of Bürstner's premium relaunch.
Why it lands
- Starting from the occupant's day rather than the classic vehicle layout let use define the form.
- Functions were designed to move and change state, so no square metre is locked to a single purpose.
- Small size stopped being the limit: one volume sequences through lounge, dining, bathroom and bedroom.
- Visual order and calm surfaces make the transformable space feel more spacious and simpler to use.
What it did
Named Red Dot: Best of the Best 2026 — the Signature's fifth design award after honours in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK — with reviewers presenting it as the model that erases the camper-van-versus-motorhome divide and anchors Bürstner's premium relaunch.
What you can take
In tight spaces, don't choose which function wins — design furniture that changes state, so the same volume can be a lounge at noon and a bedroom at night.
Since then
Launched around the world premiere at Caravan Salon Düsseldorf in August 2025, the Signature drew immediate attention for its morphing floor plan and won the top Red Dot distinction in 2026. Bürstner developed the range quickly under Hubert Brandl's shared leadership with sister premium brand Niesmann+Bischoff, and the patented rotating bench and sliding bathroom became the centrepiece of the vehicle's marketing. The same transformable-space thinking continued across the Signature family as further base vehicles were added.
