What it had to solve

In modern manufacturing, floor space is scarce and cycle times short, yet payload, reach and precision usually force robots to be bulky. KUKA wanted a compact machine for narrow cells that could still handle up to 120 kg — spot welding, handling and moving heavy EV battery cells — without hiding how it works.

How it works

In modern manufacturing, floor space is scarce and cycle times short, yet a robot's payload, speed and precision usually demand a bulky footprint. KUKA set out to break that trade-off with a compact medium-payload robot for narrow cells — capable of handling and spot welding, and strong enough to move heavy battery cells for electric vehicles.

Designer Mario Selic stripped the KR IONTEC ultra down to self-supporting structures with no cladding at all, cutting materials and volumes to the absolute functional minimum. Motors and supply lines are integrated into the structure and encapsulated in the upper arm; curved surfaces, flowing transitions and rounded edges follow the forces inside, while specially cast components dissipate heat.

The bet was that function itself could be the aesthetic. The jury agreed, giving the 120 kg, 2,700 mm-reach robot Best of the Best 2026 and describing its form as 'fluid beauty' — and, weighing over 700 kg, it became the heaviest product in the Red Dot Design Museum's 2026 exhibition.

Why it lands

  • Removing cladding forced every part to justify itself structurally, so weight and volume fell to the functional minimum rather than a styling exercise.
  • Form follows force: curved surfaces and rounded edges do structural work and dissipate heat, making beauty and engineering the same decision.

What it did

The Red Dot jury awarded the KR IONTEC ultra Best of the Best 2026, praising its 'fluid beauty' and noting that industrial design can develop its own aesthetic under restrictive technical conditions. Weighing over 700 kg, the robot became the heaviest exhibit in the Red Dot Design Museum's 2026 show.

Since then

After the award, KUKA made the KR IONTEC ultra orderable, with three further variants following in summer 2026, and positioned it between its KR IONTEC and KR QUANTEC families as a compact, cost-efficient entry into automation. The robot joined the 2026 Best of the Best winners at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, where the milestones exhibition remained on view until June 2027.
