McDonald's makes anime's fake WcDonald's real — with sauce, manga and anime shorts
After decades of anime faking it as 'WcDonald's', McDonald's made it official — real sauce, manga packaging, four anime episodes, an IRL restaurant.
McDonald's Corporation
What it had to solve
Anime and manga studios had shown McDonald's for decades only in disguise: flipping the Golden Arches into a 'W', renaming the restaurant 'WcDonald's' and building running gags around it across dozens of titles. Instead of defending its trademark against the parody, McDonald's decided to honor what fans had created and bring the fictional restaurant to life as an official, worldwide brand campaign.
How it works
For decades, anime studios could not put the real McDonald's on screen, so they flipped the Golden Arches into a 'W', renamed the restaurant 'WcDonald's' and turned it into a running joke across dozens of titles. Rather than defend the trademark, McDonald's chose to honor the fan fiction. 'The WcDonald's universe is a reflection of what fans have created,' said McDonald's USA chief marketing officer Tariq Hassan.
From Feb. 26, 2024, the fictional restaurant became real in more than 30 markets: a limited Savory Chili WcDonald's Sauce paired with 10-piece 'WcNuggets', manga packaging drawn by Acky Bright with codes to weekly digital manga, and four Studio Pierrot anime shorts released each Monday until March 18 across action, romance, mecha and fantasy. Three emerging anime artists were given grants and a mentoring session with Bright.
The campaign peaked with a WcDonald's Immersive Dining Experience in Los Angeles on March 9-10, built around 360-degree projection mapping and the four anime stories. OpenTable reservations sold out in under 30 minutes; We Are Social reports 1,200-plus guests, 1,800 meals served, more than 90% five-star ratings, over 300 media placements and more than 4 billion impressions. McDonald's later told investors the campaign lifted Chicken McNugget category sales.
Why it lands
- It gave up control instead of defending the trademark: by making a parody the brand never authorized official, McDonald's converted decades of fan-created affection into owned energy.
- The cadence matched fan rituals: weekly manga drops and Monday anime episodes turned the campaign into a month-long habit of returning to the brand.
- The product carried the fiction: a limited sauce and 'WcNuggets' pairing gave the imaginary restaurant a physical taste, giving digital fans a reason to visit stores.
- A scarce, ticketed IRL experience amplified everything: selling out in 30 minutes created the scarcity and earned media that scaled one pop-up into a global conversation.
What it did
OpenTable reservations for the Los Angeles experience sold out in less than 30 minutes. We Are Social, the agency behind it, reports over 1,200 guests attended, 1,800 meals were served, 2,100 coupons drove traffic to local restaurants, more than 90% of attendees rated the night 5 out of 5, and the activation earned over 300 media placements and more than 4 billion impressions. McDonald's own Q1 2024 investor commentary credited WcDonald's with creating 'passionate brand excitement' and lifting Chicken McNugget category sales.
What you can take
Don't litigate a beloved parody; absorb it — canonizing the knockoff let McDonald's turn decades of unpaid fan fiction into owned brand energy.
Since then
The four anime shorts and digital manga kept the universe alive through March 18, 2024, and McDonald's featured WcDonald's in its Q1 earnings story as proof of culturally relevant marketing that lifted Chicken McNugget sales. It became part of a run of pop-culture plays aimed at younger fans, and agencies later cited the Los Angeles dining experience as a model for immersive brand storytelling. The sauce and packaging rotated out after the limited run, but a restaurant that anime studios had been drawing for decades was now an official chapter of McDonald's own brand story.
