Coca-Cola Creations turns the 136-year-old soda itself into limited product drops
An experimental Coca-Cola platform remixes the classic drink through unexpected limited-edition drops, fusing brand communications with product development.

What it had to solve
Culture moves faster than ever and younger generations prioritise newness, exclusivity and authenticity, so Coca-Cola needed new reasons for young people to care about and connect to a 136-year-old legacy brand.
How it works
By 2022 Coca-Cola was a 136-year-old icon competing for young people who prioritise newness, exclusivity and authenticity — precisely what an old, everywhere brand is not. Coca-Cola Creations, an experimental platform unveiled in February 2022, answered by treating the drink itself as the canvas: limited-edition expressions, each inventing its own world.
The first drop, Coca-Cola Starlight, imagined a Coke from somewhere in space — a reddish drink with notes of stargazing by a campfire, a star-field pack, and a digital-first campaign in which scanning the can triggered an augmented-reality concert. It fused product development with brand communications: the flavour, the packaging and the experience were one single idea.
Creations was structured as sequential, limited releases rather than a one-off campaign, which made the platform repeatable. Each edition gave young drinkers a new reason to care about the trademark, moving across physical and digital worlds so the brand could be discovered again and again.
Why it lands
- It made a heritage product feel scarce again — limited editions turned one of the most available drinks on earth into something to hunt for.
- By inventing a world for each drop, the platform gave the product itself a story, so the marketing did not have to be bolted on afterwards.
- Sequential releases turned the brand into an event schedule, creating anticipation and repeat engagement instead of a single push.
- Fusing communications and product development meant the idea and the drink shipped together, so nothing got lost between teams.
What it did
The platform gave a heritage brand a repeatable mechanism for newness: every drop carried its own product story and digital experience, giving younger drinkers a reason to seek out, discover and share a trademark that had become ordinary.
What you can take
When a legacy brand feels distant from young culture, don't refresh the story — make the product a stream of limited editions, so every drop is an event and product development does the marketing.
Since then
The platform's first drop, Coca-Cola Starlight, went on sale across North America on February 21, 2022, with further Creations editions promised through the year. The platform work was later archived by D&AD under Branding — an example of a 136-year-old brand lending its trademark to new expressions rather than defending it with traditional advertising.
