What it had to solve
A production engineer by background felt espresso machines were getting larger, more plastic-heavy and more app-integrated without improving the underlying technology: pumps dated to 1977 and burrs descended from spice grinders. What started as a single machine for personal use spiraled into a full espresso machine, grinder and upgrade kit.
How it works
Velofuso began as one person's espresso machine for personal use and spiraled, in the founder's words, out of control. The trigger was a frustration with the category: machines kept getting bigger, more plastic-heavy and more app-integrated while their working parts stayed stuck — the vibratory pump dated to 1977 and grinder burrs were descendants of spice-grinder shapes. As a production engineer, he decided the fix was not another app but the internals themselves.
The result was two products: Trefolo, a minimalist espresso machine with a compact adjustable gear pump (gear pumps otherwise meant spending several thousand dollars), and Turbina, a grinder with a cylindrical burr that hides the motor inside it and is supported from within, avoiding the alignment problems of oversized flat burrs. Both run on DC power from an external brick, keep plastic out of the fluid path, and strip down with ordinary tools; the machine even skips a boiler, taking hot water from the user's kettle and concentrating engineering on holding pressure in the group head.
As a launch it was deliberately unfinished but public: the maker did every photo and video himself, published the manual, promised a full spare-parts catalogue, and released a kit so existing espresso machines could adopt the gear pump. Four factories told him the parts were impossible, and months of prototypes sprayed water in his face before one day everything added up to a good shot. The Show HN presented all of it, warts and all.
Why it lands
- The insight was comparative: the pump and burrs inside were decades-old defaults nobody re-examined, so redesigning them was real innovation rather than surface styling.
- The cylindrical burr changed the geometry of the problem: more cutting surface in the same footprint, better internal support, and a motor hidden inside the burr — three wins from one shape.
- Shipping the gear pump as a drop-in kit made the idea contagious: owners of existing machines could upgrade without buying a whole espresso machine, spreading the design through the installed base.
- Radical internals were paired with a humble launch: admitting no boiler, DC bricks and imperfect photos, then answering hundreds of comments, built more trust than polished marketing copy could.
What it did
The 13 December 2024 Show HN drew 797 points and 477 comments. Commenters debated the gear-pump claims, demanded real-kitchen photos and a full video, and called it the most impressive solo project they had seen; pre-orders opened while the founder answered feedback and fixed site gaps in the thread.

Since then
In the thread the founder absorbed weeks of feedback in a day: skeptics wanted a full un-cropped video, real kitchens and visible prices, and he answered each point, promising kitchen photos and a manual on the warranty page. The site stayed live: by 2026 the store listed Turbina as sold out, Trefolo on sale from $599 to $499, and a redesigned Pump Upgrade Kit V2 in stock shipping from Italy, its copy claiming dozens of espresso machines worldwide had adopted it. The launch itself ended where it began: 797 points and 477 comments of engineers stress-testing a solo hardware project.
