Kärcher's flow-through pressure washer ends hose tangles — Red Dot Best of the Best 2026
Kärcher's flow-through chassis separates water and power from the outlet, ending hose tangles — the Comfort range wins Red Dot Best of the Best 2026.
Kärcher (Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG)
What it had to solve
Pressure washers had grown into collections of attachments, tanks and trailing hoses, and the tangle of supply lines was the complaint users met every time they cleaned. Kärcher set out to rethink the category around more convenient use rather than adding another feature.
How it works
Pressure washing was a category defined by its annoyances: machines that looked powerful but sent hoses, cables and attachments in every direction, so the operator spent as much time untangling as cleaning. With the Pressure Washer Comfort Range, Kärcher set out to make convenient use the centre of the design rather than an afterthought.
The central innovation is the flow-through chassis: the power supply and water connection enter one side of the machine, while the high-pressure outlet sits on the other. That linear logic means the working hose cannot cross the supply lines, ending tangles and tripping hazards while leaving the operator free to move. The 2-in-1 detergent tank integrates the foam nozzle and detergent container into the appliance, so detergent is supplied continuously through the lance without stopping to fetch parts, and frequently used accessories sit on the front without breaking the machine's clean lines.
Ergonomics were treated as part of the product language: a telescopic handle locks precisely for back-friendly working heights, and the 'COMFORT!Hold' function reduces the force needed to hold the spray gun. Visually, the range stays inside Kärcher's established identity of signal yellow and deep black, so one coherent platform carries the whole family.
The Red Dot jury awarded the range Best of the Best 2026, its highest prize, remarking that 'every detail has been carefully considered and precisely executed' and that advanced technology and user convenience are united in a clean, well-organised design. Trade media counted eight Kärcher prizes across the iF Design Award 2026 and Red Dot Award that season and noted the winning models were available through specialist retail and online.
Why it lands
- It solved the core complaint — tangled hoses — by rethinking the machine's layout: water and power enter one side, the outlet leaves the other, so the lines physically cannot cross.
- It integrated consumables into the body, with a 2-in-1 detergent tank and foam nozzle, so the operator never stops to fetch attachments and detergent flows continuously through the lance.
- Ergonomics got equal billing with cleaning power: the telescopic handle and COMFORT!Hold trigger reduce strain, which makes 'more convenient' a verifiable claim rather than a slogan.
- The restrained family look of signal yellow and deep black let one platform carry the entire range, so an engineering fix also reads as coherent brand design.
What it did
The Red Dot jury gave the range its highest honour, Best of the Best 2026, praising a design where 'every detail has been carefully considered and precisely executed'; Kärcher collected eight prizes across the two competitions that season — four iF Design Awards 2026 and four Red Dot Awards.
What you can take
Re-examine the layout of a mature product: separating inputs from outputs so hoses cannot cross is a systems-level fix that only looks obvious later — and it made a commodity tool an award winner.
Since then
The Comfort range received Red Dot's Best of the Best 2026, the highest honour in the product design award, with a jury statement that every detail had been carefully considered and precisely executed. German trade media reported that Kärcher took eight prizes across the two competitions that season — four iF Design Awards 2026 and four Red Dot Awards — and that the winning Home & Garden products, including the Comfort series, were available through specialist retailers and online.
