TNT Belgium puts a 'Push to add drama' button in a quiet town square

To launch its Belgian channel, TNT hid actors around a square with a red button — one push set off an action scene and a 23M-view viral.

What it had to solve

TNT, a channel built on drama programming, was launching on Belgian television and needed people to understand what the brand stood for. Instead of a conventional commercial, agency Duval Guillaume Modem wanted to prove the promise directly: TNT means drama, delivered daily, in real life.

How it works

TNT was entering the Belgian television market as a channel about drama, a promise that is hard to explain in a conventional launch commercial. Agency Duval Guillaume Modem chose to show it instead: in a quiet square of an average Flemish town it installed a large red button with a sign reading 'Push to add drama'.

An unsuspecting cyclist eventually pressed it, and a staged scene erupted around the watching crowd: an ambulance arrived and its crew dropped the patient, the cyclist crashed into the open door and started a fight with an attendant, a woman on a motorbike was chased by a car, and a squad of rugby players carried someone off the square. Every beat was a television drama trope performed live, with the crowd's genuine reactions filmed throughout.

The stunt ended when a giant curtain dropped over a building reading 'Your daily dose of drama — TNT. We Know Drama', turning the whole town square into the channel's opening title sequence.

Published on April 11, 2012, the film passed 22.6 million YouTube views within a week and became, according to Unruly, the second most shared ad ever at the time with around 3 million shares — behind only Volkswagen's Super Bowl film 'The Force'. Its views later passed 55 million, making the launch one of the most watched and shared commercials of its year.

Why it lands

  • The stunt dramatised the product claim literally, so viewers did not need an argument for why the channel was about drama.
  • Real reactions from bystanders carried the authenticity that scripted advertising cannot fake.
  • Placing the button in an ordinary town made the extraordinary scene feel accessible — it could happen anywhere, including your street.
  • The reveal gave the chaos a brand payoff: the curtain line told people exactly what they had just watched.

What it did

The film, 'A Dramatic Surprise on a Quiet Square', passed 22.6 million views within a week and was ranked the second most shared ad of all time by Unruly, with about 3 million shares behind Volkswagen's 'The Force'. Its YouTube total later climbed past 55 million views.

What you can take

A launch can demonstrate the brand promise instead of describing it: put the audience inside the experience, film the real reactions, and the proof becomes the campaign.

Since then

The launch film made TNT Belgium one of the year's biggest viral successes and was followed by further stunts from the same campaign. The idea became a standard reference point for live-experience marketing and was widely imitated, though few follow-ups matched the original's combination of surprise, scale and a clear brand reveal.
