What it had to solve

HORNBACH's spring campaign had to tell people to look after their plants, and to position the DIY and gardening superstore as the place that supplies whatever a garden needs.

How it works

Every spring, HORNBACH has to sell plant care. The store's 'Unleashed' campaign flipped the usual duty-based message: instead of telling gardeners what they should do, it imagined what plants do when owners do not bother.

In the film, abandoned plants become runaway rebels. They leave the garden, steal the car, start street races, crash into cardboard boxes, throw up leaves in dark alleys and pick up a hitchhiking shrub along the way — all because the one place that can provide everything they need is HORNBACH, the European DIY and gardening superstore.

By giving the plants agency, the campaign turned a seasonal chore into entertainment: the victim of neglect becomes the protagonist of its own escape, and the punchline points back at the store as the plants' destination of choice.

Why it lands

  • Personifying the neglected plant makes the warning land as comedy rather than scolding, so gardeners see their own laziness reflected without being lectured.
  • Escalation from leaving the garden to stealing a car and street racing builds a plot worth watching, carrying the reminder deeper than a static message.
  • Making HORNBACH the runaway plants' destination ties every absurd beat back to the store's range, so the joke and the offer are the same sentence.

What it did

The neglect warning became an absurdist story in which the garden itself walks out on its owner, and the campaign earned a place in the D&AD awards archive.

What you can take

Give the neglected thing agency: once a plant can leave, steal a car and drive off, the reminder to care for it becomes a story people want to watch instead of a chore.

Since then

The film anchored HORNBACH's spring push and became part of the D&AD awards archive, where the work is filed under Direction. No sales or reach figures appear in the archive entry; the case stands on the idea that a garden center can get attention by letting its product walk out the door.
