What it had to solve
Tiger Beer, a brand born from the streets of Asia that champions football's underdogs, became Manchester United's official beer partner - and had to stand out in a market drowning in football sponsorships, celebrity endorsements and tired watch parties, while honouring the fans 10,000 km away who cheer at 3am and are never remembered.
The idea
Flip the sponsorship ritual: instead of another watch party, have thousands of Malaysian fans sign a banner, fly it to England and install it inside Old Trafford.
How it works
With agency Sambal Lab, Tiger opened The Trafford Den, Asia's first Tiger x Manchester United pop-up bar in Kuala Lumpur, launched in May 2025 with Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Tom Heaton and club legend Nani on hand. At the season's final-game watch party, fans arriving expecting a viewing night were handed permanent markers and signed their names on a banner - which Tiger then flew to Manchester and installed inside Old Trafford.
What it did
The banner stunt and den won Bronze for Best Use of Sponsorships & Partnerships at the Kancil Awards 2025, and the platform rolled on: the late-2025 Roar United season compiled nearly 500 Malaysian fan stories into an archive displayed at the Manchester United Museum, hand-delivered by two winning supporters.
Background
Malaysia is one of the most devoted Manchester United territories on earth, and Tiger Beer had partnered with the club for over five years before becoming its official beer partner. The problem, as Tiger's Kancil entry put it: in football only legends leave their mark - Rooney, Ronaldo, Beckham - while the fans cheering at 3am, 10,000 km from Old Trafford, are never remembered. Every rival beer was doing the same watch parties.
Tiger's answer flipped the ritual. In May 2025 it opened The Trafford Den, Asia's first Tiger x Manchester United pop-up bar in Kuala Lumpur, launching it with five first-team names: Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Tom Heaton and legend Nani. Heineken Malaysia's Julie Kuan framed it as a homegrown home for fans who live and breathe the club - sited in Malaysia precisely because the following there is massive and vocal.
The signature idea gave fans the one honour the sport reserves for legends: their names in the ground. At the season's final-game watch party at the Den, supporters arriving for a viewing night were handed permanent markers - thousands signed a banner that Tiger flew to Manchester and installed inside Old Trafford, so the club's home now literally carries the names of Malaysians who never stopped believing in it.
The platform compounded. In late 2025, 'Roar United' collected nearly 500 written fan stories into an archive displayed at the Manchester United Museum, hand-carried there by two winning fans after a national showdown. The original banner stunt took Bronze for Best Use of Sponsorships & Partnerships at the Kancil Awards 2025.
Why it lands
The insight inverted the sponsorship: brands pay to stand next to the club's legends, but the fans' unmet need was their own recognition - so Tiger made recognition the product.
A physical act (signing in permanent marker) beats a hashtag: it is ritual, commitment and a story every participant retells.
Installing the banner inside Old Trafford made the club itself the co-signatory - the brand did something even die-hard fans had never seen a sponsor do.
Malaysia as the launch market matched Tiger's underdog roots, turning a global partnership into a local statement rather than imported global marketing.
The den gave the campaign a permanent venue, so a one-night stunt kept generating watch parties, content and traffic across the season.
What you can take
A sponsorship buys logo placement; owning a fandom means giving supporters something the club itself would never think to give - in football, the ultimate tribute is a place in the stadium's story.
Since then
The Trafford Den ran as Tiger's fan hub through the 2025-26 season, and the platform grew from one banner to an institution: Roar United's finale in December 2025 sent the fan archive to the Manchester United Museum with winners Bon Lee Ngee and Loh Shao Wei making the 6,000-mile delivery. Tiger continued as Manchester United's official beer partner, and the Kancil Bronze marked the programme as one of Malaysia's standout sponsorship activations of the year.
