What it had to solve
In March 2019 Tencent signed a co-marketing deal with 'Lao Gan Ma managers', ran months of chili-sauce ads across QQ Speed and its S-League esports, then sued when the bill went unpaid — only for police to reveal three impostors with a forged seal had signed it to steal game gift codes. China's internet spent the day roasting the 'unbeatable' legal department.
The idea
Instead of lawyering up, Tencent confessed on Bilibili: a sobbing penguin wails 'others lose ¥8 on a fake bottle of chili sauce — I lost ¥16 million.'
How it works
On July 1, 2020 Tencent's Bilibili account posted 'the chili sauce at lunch suddenly tastes off'; its Weibo offered 1,000 bottles of Lao Gan Ma for fraud tips; that evening it published the guichu video 'I'm the silly penguin who ate fake chili sauce', plus a canteen photo of plain rice with sauce: 'that's the only dish tonight.'
What it did
The video passed 9 million plays. Alipay, Baidu, Taobao and WeChat's official accounts piled in to roast it, Bilibili gave away 10 bottles, and netizens coined '逗鹅冤' — the day's laughingstock ended it with the sympathy win.
Background
In March 2019, three people posing as Lao Gan Ma marketing managers signed a co-promotion contract with Tencent. From April, Tencent made Lao Gan Ma title partner of QQ Speed's S-League, ran chili-sauce skins and events in the game for months, and pushed the hashtag #老干妈漂移火辣辣# to 180 million reads. When no payment came, Tencent sued, and a Shenzhen Nanshan court froze ¥16.24 million of Lao Gan Ma's assets. The ruling surfaced on June 29, 2020 — and Lao Gan Ma, a brand famous for never advertising, replied that it had never signed anything with Tencent and had called the police.
On July 1, Guiyang police announced three suspects had forged Lao Gan Ma's company seal; their goal was the game gift-pack codes bundled with the promotion, to resell online. The revelation that Tencent — whose legal team netizens jokingly called 'the Nanshan Invincibles' — had been conned out of ¥16 million set off a festival of mockery; commenters coined '逗鹅冤', a pun on the Yuan-dynasty tragedy The Injustice to Dou E.
Tencent's answer that same day was comedy, not counsel: a noon Bilibili post sighing 'the chili sauce at lunch suddenly tastes off', a Weibo statement offering 1,000 bottles of Lao Gan Ma as a reward for similar fraud tips, and an evening video, 'I'm the silly penguin who ate fake chili sauce', in which Tencent's mascot sobs 'others lose ¥8 on a fake bottle — I lost ¥16 million! Officer, please help me!' A canteen photo showed plain rice with chili sauce: 'that's the only dish tonight; learn your lesson.'
The self-own became the story. Alipay posted 'may there be no fake seals under heaven' (plugging its blockchain), Baidu pleaded 'this has nothing to do with me', Taobao offered free game packs, and brand accounts flooded Tencent's Bilibili comments. The video passed 9 million plays, and on July 10 the two companies issued a joint statement: Tencent apologized, withdrew the suit and the asset freeze, and both sides said they would explore real cooperation.
Why it lands
The facts were indefensible, so Tencent defended nothing — confession disarmed the mockery by joining it.
A mascot can say what a corporation can't: the penguin persona made vulnerability charming instead of incompetent.
Speed mattered — all three moves landed within hours of the police announcement, before the joke hardened into reputation.
Inviting rivals to laugh along (1,000 bottles of the accuser's product) turned a one-sided roast into a shared meme.
What you can take
When you're caught being the fool, out-joke the internet: first-party self-mockery turns humiliation into sympathy faster than any lawyer's statement.
Since then
On July 10, 2020, Tencent and Lao Gan Ma issued a joint statement: Tencent apologized in person, withdrew the lawsuit and asset freeze, and both sides floated future cooperation. '逗鹅冤' entered the Chinese internet lexicon as shorthand for an elaborate corporate blunder, and the penguin video remains the reference case for self-deprecating crisis PR in China.
