Telenor Missed Calls: a free service that saves the voicemails people cannot bear to lose
A NORD DDB creative's fear of losing her late stepfather's voicemail became a free Telenor service that saves messages as files — and a Cannes Bronze Lion.
Telenor Sweden
What it had to solve
Telenor Sweden competes in a market where rivals sell similar phones and deals, and its own positioning, 'Between People', focuses on human connection. Josephine Wallin Ankarstrand, a creative director at NORD DDB, thought of the voicemail her stepfather left shortly before he died and feared losing it, so she proposed that Telenor offer a way to save such messages forever. Around 60,000 to 65,000 voicemails are left on the network every day, and research found people carrying old phones or refusing updates so a loved one's message would not disappear.
How it works
Telenor Sweden positions itself around human connection with the concept 'Between People', in a market where rivals compete on similar phones and deals. Josephine Wallin Ankarstrand, creative director at NORD DDB, feared losing the voicemail her stepfather left her shortly before he died, and proposed that Telenor let people save such messages forever. Around 60,000 to 65,000 voicemails are left on the network every day.
Research found how far people go to preserve a voice: one person carried an old phone to keep a message from her mother, and another had not updated her phone in five years for fear of losing a message from her daughter. Grief researchers told the team that maintaining a bond with someone who has died matters, and that hearing a loved one's voice can comfort. So Telenor built Missed Calls, a free web app in which customers register their number, pass a two-step verification and download their voicemails as sound files.
The campaign film follows a man from childhood to fatherhood, holding onto his late mother's voicemail; a milk carton triggers the memory of her telling him to pick up a package, and years later he plays the message to his daughter for the first time. Real messages were used with permission. Results included more than 3.2 million in earned reach, over 3,000 downloads in the first weeks, liking at 63 percent against a 41 percent category benchmark, and consideration up six percentage points to 34 percent. The work won a Bronze Lion in Film at Cannes Lions 2024.
Why it lands
- The idea began in a real, personal loss — the creative director's own stepfather — so the service answered a fear people actually lived rather than a manufactured insight.
- People were already keeping old phones and avoiding updates to preserve messages, so demand existed long before the product did.
- A free download service, not a paid storage plan, fit Telenor's 'Between People' positioning and gave the campaign something true to point to.
- Grief stayed the subject: real messages used with permission and a film that treats the bond as the point, with Telenor as the quiet enabler.
What it did
The campaign reported more than 3.2 million in earned reach and over 3,000 downloads in its first weeks. Among those who saw it, liking was 63 percent against a 41 percent category benchmark; consideration rose six percentage points, from 28 to 34 percent, which Telenor said no previous campaign had achieved; and the film's view time ran more than 670 percent above benchmark. The work won a Bronze Lion in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2024.
What you can take
Instead of advertising that it cares, ship the care: the film's emotion was backed by a real free service customers could use, which made a grief insight into something Telenor actually did.
Since then
The One Show's 2025 case page records Missed Calls with full background, execution and results, and the Swedish trade press Resumé confirms the Bronze Lion that Telenor and NORD DDB won in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2024. The archive documents no long-term retention figures, so the case stands on the move itself: a telecom turned an agency's grief insight into a real, free customer service, then let real voicemails carry the campaign — proof that emotional advertising is often backed by something the company actually shipped.
