stc's Sarha, the world's first content-creating camel, films Saudi's unseen half

Half of Saudi was unreachable by foot, so stc made Sarha the first camel content creator: photographers drove her hump-mounted rig and uploaded HD in real time.

The ideaProve coverage with a camel: Sarha carries a remote-controlled camera rig across Saudi's uninhabited half while photographers shoot HD images that upload in real time.substantial

What it had to solve

stc has the biggest network and coverage in Saudi Arabia, but after 5G arrived every rival claimed the newest and widest network. Nearly half the country is uninhabited, unseen and unreachable by foot, so stc had to prove its claim precisely where it sounded least plausible.

How it works

stc operates Saudi Arabia's biggest network and widest coverage, but after 5G arrived every rival claimed the same. Nearly half of the country is uninhabited, unseen and unreachable by foot — so stc chose to demonstrate its coverage where the claim was hardest to believe.

The answer was Sarha, billed as the world's first camel content creator. A camera rig went onto her hump and a custom control centre let photographers around the world direct the camera settings around the clock while Sarha crossed the desert.

Photographers took beautiful high-definition images in real time and uploaded them immediately on stc's high-speed network, publishing never-seen-before content to Sarha's platform — later a data dashboard, an outdoor 'Shot by Sarha' gallery, a coffee-table book and a Snapchat lens that showed the view from the camel's perspective.

The stunt proved the network instead of promising it: stc kept its 89% network-strength perception and added 2 points, while the launch film drew 4.48 million views and 307 million impressions. D&AD filed the work in its awards archive under Digital Marketing.

Why it lands

  • The proof and the story are the same object: every beautiful live upload is evidence of network speed, so stc never has to state the claim.
  • A camel is the one Saudi icon that historically goes where no human can, which makes the coverage demo culturally inevitable rather than contrived.
  • Putting photographers in remote control made the creators the audience too: the world watched the shoot as content, not as a corporate test.
  • The rig pushed the network to its limits in terrain that mattered, so the demonstration had physical stakes rather than lab conditions.

What it did

Sarha's rig tested stc's network across terrain no crew could reach on foot and presented Saudi's unseen wonders to the world. stc held its network-strength perception at 89% and raised it 2 points; the launch film drew 4.48M views and 307M impressions, and the work entered D&AD's archive under Digital Marketing.

What you can take

To prove infrastructure, make the proof the story: turn coverage into an adventure people want to follow, and the claim gets watched — and believed — instead of argued about.

Since then

Meet Sarha travelled the regional awards circuit: Dubai Lynx 2022 records a Gold and two Silvers alongside its digital shortlist, the campaign featured among Epica's 2021 winners and took Silver at the WARC MENA Strategy Awards 2022. stc reported $2 million in PR value from 1,602 posts and 1,620 mentions, and Sarha kept roaming afterwards, inviting photographers to push the limits of stc's network.
