What it had to solve
Spotify was evolving from a music-first company into an audio platform, and needed its brand to communicate that shift. The brief was a series of motion-driven videos to be used year-round globally, featuring key music and podcast talent, that could stay relevant as markets and talent changed.
The idea
Make listening the brand by making the pictures obey the sound: motion-driven videos where visuals respond organically to audio and talent swaps per market.
How it works
ManvsMachine worked with Spotify to direct, design and animate a global evergreen campaign for the new consumer-facing brand platform Listening Is Everything: two spots mixing artist imagery, typography, 2D hand-drawn and CG elements. The motion responded organically to the sound design, and talent and video assets were built to be swapped out so local markets could update the creative through the year.
What it did
The films became Spotify’s year-round, globally adapted visual statement of the audio pivot — launched in 2020 as its brand campaign — and the work entered D&AD’s awards archive as a branding case built on motion and sound.
Background
In 2020 Spotify was publicly evolving from a music-first company into an audio platform, and its brand needed to stand for more than songs. The brief was a series of motion-driven videos to be used year-round globally, featuring the key music and podcast talent that defined the new, wider audio world.
The London studio ManvsMachine directed, designed and animated the result for the consumer-facing brand platform Listening Is Everything: two spots that celebrate the art of listening by combining artist imagery, typography, 2D hand-drawn and CG storytelling into a dynamic, immersive visual world. Crucially, the motion responded organically to the sound design — the films moved the way the audio felt.
Rather than a single hero film, the system was built to keep working: talent and video assets could be swapped out throughout the year, letting local markets update the creative and keep it relevant. The films launched in 2020 as Spotify’s global brand campaign and were later filed in the D&AD awards archive under Branding.
Why it lands
Syncing motion to sound made the films demonstrate the brand claim instead of just stating it.
Building talent and assets as swappable modules let one campaign stay fresh across markets for a full year.
Mixing artist imagery, typography, hand-drawn 2D and CG gave the visual world the layered texture of listening to many voices.
Featuring both music and podcast talent inside one system bridged the two halves of the audio platform Spotify was pivoting toward.
What you can take
Build the brand idea into the production system: when motion itself responds to audio, every market version re-proves the claim that listening changes everything.
Since then
The Listening is Everything films served as Spotify’s global brand campaign for the audio-platform era, adaptable by local markets through talent and asset swaps. The work was preserved in the D&AD awards archive as a branding example, and its structure — motion bound to sound, content designed for replacement — became a reference for how an evergreen campaign could keep a brand platform alive all year.
