What it had to solve

So Foot, France's leading football magazine, watched its readers face the same annual dilemma: celebrate Valentine's Day or follow their team in Ligue 1. Instead of choosing sides, the magazine built a format that let fans do both at once — live football that fits a candlelit dinner.

How it works

Every Valentine's Day, French football fans face a ritual dilemma: take their partner to dinner or watch their team play Ligue 1. So Foot, the football magazine known for combining expertise with humor, decided the choice itself was the problem — and invented a format where the match could be part of the romance.

Football Lover FM, created with BETC Paris and BETC Fullsix, was an ephemeral AI-powered radio station that turned live match commentary into love songs in real time. Journalists commentated as usual; AI converted the commentary into musical styles matched to the action — a rough tackle sung as bossa nova, a top-corner goal as flamenco, a red card as sensual jazz. The station broadcast three Ligue 1 matches on February 14–16, 2025, including Brest–Auxerre on Valentine's night itself.

The audience responded to the joke. Across three days, the station logged 92,000 unique listeners with an average listening session of 21 minutes, and So Foot recorded its biggest web-traffic peak of the year. The campaign went on to make the Epica Awards 2025 shortlist and won the Gold award in Radio Advertising, becoming a reference case for what ephemeral audio can do for a media brand.

Why it lands

  • It resolved a real recurring conflict for the audience instead of interrupting them with an ad.
  • AI matched each commentary moment to a musical genre, making every broadcast feel live and unrepeatable.
  • The humor was perfectly on-brand for So Foot, so the stunt felt like the magazine, not like an agency gimmick.
  • An ephemeral station created scarcity — three nights only — which turned listening into an event.

What it did

In its three days on air the station drew 92,000 unique listeners with an average listening time of 21 minutes, and the magazine recorded its highest web-traffic peak of the year. The campaign became a case study for ephemeral audio: it made the shortlists for the Epica Awards 2025 and then won the Gold award in the Radio Advertising category.

What you can take

When your audience faces a false choice between two loves, don't pick a side — build the format that lets them keep both, and the audience will find you.

Since then

Football Lover FM outlived its three-night broadcast as a case study. Radio industry outlets in France and beyond analyzed it as proof that audio can move beyond standard formats, and in December 2025 it won the Gold award in Radio Advertising at the Epica Awards after making the shortlist. For So Foot, the campaign also paid attention dividends: the record web-traffic peak tied to the station showed that a media brand's most valuable promotion can be an experience that dramatizes its own point of view — football for people who love other things too.
