What it had to solve
France's leading animal health insurer wanted pet abandonment — roughly 100,000 animals a year in France — on the agenda of audiences far beyond its usual reach, timed to World Pet Abandonment Day just before the summer holidays.
The idea
Turn the game's heartbreaking mechanic into a Twitch challenge: gamers band together to battle demons and give the in-game dogs a joyful, safe walk.
How it works
Campaign by Fcinq (Australie.GAD group): Santévet partnered with multigaming streamer KennyStream to rally Twitch communities into a #SaveTheDoggos challenge inside Diablo IV, protecting the game's dogs with group walks while battling demons, riding the game's 93 million hours of gameplay in its first four days.
What it did
No results figures were reported. The challenge tied the brand to pet protection inside pop culture's biggest game and gave the anti-abandonment message a new social dimension on Twitch.
Background
Each year around 100,000 animals are abandoned in France, and for five years the last weekend of June has been the World Day against pet abandonment, timed just before peak vacation season. For the 2023 edition, Santévet — France's leading animal health insurance provider — took its cause into the hottest game of the moment.
The hook was a mechanic Diablo IV players knew too well: as covered by Numerama and tracked by the @Canyoupetthedog account, petting a dog in the game makes it follow you, which makes it an immediate target — and it won't survive the demons' attack. Don't pet the dogs, the community rule went.
Diablo IV had launched that June to record numbers: $666 million in sales in five days and, per BFMTV, 93 million hours of gameplay in four days — about 10,000 years. Into that crowd stepped Santévet's #SaveTheDoggos challenge, built with agency Fcinq (Australie.GAD group) and multigaming streamer KennyStream: Twitch communities band together to battle demons and give the game's dogs a joyful walk, protecting them from their scripted fate.
The challenge framed animals as sentient beings deserving care, using pop culture's pull to carry the anti-abandonment message to audiences — gamers included — the brand would never reach through traditional channels.
Why it lands
The campaign didn't advertise next to the game — it played inside it, using a mechanic players already grieved.
A pet insurer saving virtual dogs is a brand promise enacted, not stated.
World Pet Abandonment Day gave the stunt a date and a cause; Twitch and KennyStream gave it a crowd.
What you can take
Find the moment a game's own mechanics make players feel protective — then give that instinct somewhere to go, with a streamer who can gather the crowd.
Since then
The takeover ran around World Pet Abandonment Day in June 2023; LBB reported it as Santévet's stand against pet abandonment, with no performance figures published.
