What it had to solve
Take Rolls-Royce's brand promise of 'Inspiring Greatness' from a passive experience to an immersive one, and gamify the debut of the Wraith Kryptos in honour of the car's Delphic origins.
The idea
Turn the car's built-in cryptographic ciphers into a public puzzle hunt — the 'Wraith Kryptos Enigma' mobile quiz, from Morse Code to Caesar ciphers.
How it works
A cryptographic quiz and a site page with hidden devices were promoted via social channels, challenging followers to crack the 'Wraith Kryptos Enigma'. Built with AKQA UK, Smoke & Mirrors and Wavemaker UK.
What it did
In the first two weeks engagement rose 314% on Instagram and 50% on Facebook versus the prior period, and digital lead generation increased by 900%. The limited run of 50 sold out before reaching the public market — one of the fastest-selling Collection Cars in Rolls-Royce's history.
Background
For the launch of the Wraith Kryptos — a collection car with cryptographic ciphers folded into its design — Rolls-Royce turned the car's own codes into a game. Followers were invited to crack the 'Wraith Kryptos Enigma', a mobile quiz promoted via social channels and backed by a site page with hidden devices, running from Morse Code to Caesar ciphers.
The gamified digital adaptation took the brand promise of 'Inspiring Greatness' from passive to immersive, honouring the car's Delphic origins. The work was built by AKQA UK with Smoke & Mirrors and media by Wavemaker UK.
The results made the case for the mechanic: in the first two weeks engagement rose 314% on Instagram and 50% on Facebook against the previous period, digital lead generation grew 900%, and the limited run of 50 sold out before becoming available to the public — one of the fastest-selling Collection Cars in Rolls-Royce's history. Global brand manager Peter Beadle called it 'undoubtedly the most innovative and future pushing campaign in recent years at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars'.
Why it lands
The puzzle is native to the product: the ciphers were already in the car, so the campaign amplified design rather than decorating it.
Difficulty filters and flatters at once — solving Morse Code and Caesar ciphers marks the participant as the kind of person who belongs in a Rolls-Royce.
The enigma generated repeat visits and sharing during the launch window, visible in the +314% Instagram engagement.
Lead generation, not just awareness: the +900% digital lead increase turned puzzlers into a prospect pool for a 50-car run.
What you can take
If the product contains a secret, make the audience earn it: a solvable mystery converts spectators into investigators and prospects.
Since then
All 50 Wraith Kryptos cars sold out before the public market launch, making it one of the fastest-selling Collection Cars in the marque's recent history.
