What it had to solve
Robinhood had moved beyond its original trading-app role into retirement, cards, crypto, advanced charts and events. The brand needed to signal maturity without losing the disruptive edge that made it recognizable.
The idea
Use a simplified quill, black-and-neutral palette and one bright Robin Neon accent to make Robinhood feel like a serious finance platform.
How it works
The team rebuilt the mark, wordmark, photography, illustration and modular layouts around a 'less is more' design ethos. The system rolled into app, web, email, social, jersey patches, event marketing and product campaigns.
What it did
The One Show awarded the identity a 2025 Bronze Pencil and reported eight online press placements with more than 47 million impressions. Design Compass noted the shift from young and techy to more traditional and premium.
Background
Robinhood's 2024 identity refresh treated growth as a design problem. The company had expanded into a wider financial platform, so the old startup energy needed to make room for clearer signals of trust, focus and breadth.
Porto Rocha and Robinhood simplified the quill, tightened the wordmark, reduced the palette to black, white, neutrals and Robin Neon, and replaced playful illustration with sharper photography and technical visual forms. The system was built to stretch across product screens, campaigns, partnerships and events.
The One Show's case framed the work as a home for serious investors and gave it a 2025 Bronze Pencil. Design Compass read the same move as a turn from a young tech feeling toward a more premium financial posture.
Why it lands
It kept one memorable color while changing almost every other signal around it.
The system matched a broader product portfolio instead of treating the redesign as surface polish.
It made restraint feel like a strategic claim: fewer distractions for more serious decisions.
The rollout tied identity to real business surfaces, from app screens to NBA jersey patches.
What you can take
When a challenger brand matures, the redesign can keep one distinctive accent while stripping away signals that trap it in its startup era.
Since then
Robinhood continued rolling the identity through early 2025 as the system became part of its campaigns and customer-facing surfaces. The One Show recognition gave the work an awards proof point, while design coverage focused on the sharper, more premium change in tone.
