Rio Carnaval's type dances to its drums — a D&AD 2022 sound-reactive identity
Tátil Design built Rio Carnival's typography to listen: the drum and tambourine drive the letters' colour and motion in rhythm.
Rio Carnaval
What it had to solve
Rio Carnival's identity had to carry the energy of the festival itself — sound, rhythm and movement. The typography brief was to translate the show's spirit rather than decorate it, drawing on the signature drum, the tambourine and the samba schools' visual language.
How it works
Rio Carnival is sound and motion before it is anything else, so its identity faced an unusual problem: how does static typography carry the spirit of a festival whose signature is the drum and the tambourine? The design answer was to stop making type that sits still and build type that listens.
Tátil Design programmed the typography to react to the instruments' actual sound, shifting colour and motion rhythmically as the music plays. Visual cues borrowed from the samba schools' flags tie the letterforms to Carnival's own culture, so the type reads as part of the show rather than as commentary on it.
The result stood out to D&AD's jury as a brilliant translation of the show's energy — a prime example of idea, craft and programming working together. Rio Carnaval's typography took a D&AD 2022 Yellow Pencil, the branding a Wood Pencil, and the project entered the awards archive as a demonstration of what dynamic type can do for event brands.
Why it lands
- Sound-reactive type ties the identity to the live experience, so the brand is felt rather than merely seen.
- Programming gave one system infinite rhythmic states instead of a single static logo, letting the type genuinely dance.
- Drawing on the drum, tambourine and samba-school flags rooted the design in Carnival's own culture, so it connected instantly.
- The project proved that idea, craft and programming together can open a new direction for how event identities move.
What it did
The typography won a Yellow Pencil at D&AD 2022, with the wider Rio Carnaval branding taking a Wood Pencil. Jurors called it a brilliant translation of the energy and spirit of the show and an example of what idea, craft and programming can create together.
What you can take
When an identity represents a live event, let the event drive the design: type that responds to real sound cannot feel generic, because the system itself is the performance.
Since then
Rio Carnaval - Typography entered D&AD's awards archive as a 2022 winner, taking a Yellow Pencil for Typography while the broader Rio Carnaval branding took a Wood Pencil for Branding. Tátil Design's project also collected honours at Cannes and The One Show the same year, and it remains a cited example of programmed, sound-driven type in festival branding.
