P•TAL (Punjab Thathera Art Legacy) sells hand-beaten metalware made by Thathera artisans — a UNESCO-recognised craft tradition — and wanted to connect with audiences beyond India while staying rooted in the craft, positioning Indian metalware as a design-forward lifestyle choice rather than a commodity purchase.

Rebuild the brand around the craft: a color system translated from Thathera metal and workshop process, packaging and story that put the artisans in the design.

Mother Tongue Design went beyond a new look, building a complete brand system across identity, positioning, packaging and storytelling. It worked against cookware packaging's minimalist default: the color system is drawn directly from the materials and processes of the Thathera workshop, so the palette becomes a form of translation rather than decoration.

Per the award announcement: since the rebrand P•TAL has served 150,000+ customers across 40+ countries, eliminated 880 kg of packaging plastic, and supports 125+ artisan families whose monthly incomes rose 3,500% in three years. P•TAL was one of five Indian brands to show at Shoppe Object in New York, opened an exclusive brand outlet in Hyderabad, and raised a $3 million Series A led by VC Grid with Rainmatter in September 2025. The work won two Blue Elephants at the 2026 Kyoorius Design Awards.

P•TAL (Punjab Thathera Art Legacy) sells hand-beaten metalware crafted by Thathera artisans, inheritors of a UNESCO-recognised metalcraft tradition. Its problem was perception: hand-beaten brass and copper read as traditional, outdated commodity cookware rather than a design-forward lifestyle choice. Mother Tongue Design (MTD) answered with a full rebrand — identity, positioning, packaging and storytelling — built directly from the craft's own materials and processes, part of a shift away from cookware packaging's minimalist default.

The commercial results reported alongside the 2026 award announcement are steep: 150,000-plus customers across more than 40 countries, 880 kg of plastic eliminated through packaging, and livelihoods for 125-plus artisan families with monthly incomes up 3,500% over three years. The repositioning also carried the brand outward — selection as one of only five Indian brands at Shoppe Object in New York, an exclusive brand outlet in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, and a $3 million Series A in September 2025 led by VC Grid with participation from Rainmatter, the fund backed by Zerodha's Nithin Kamath.

At the 2026 Kyoorius Design Awards the work won two Blue Elephants: 'Integrated' under the Design Craft track and 'Brand Identity Refresh & Rebrand: MSME' under Design in Action. MTD founder Shruti Singhi framed the philosophy: 'Trends move fast but culture moves slow... When a brand is genuinely rooted in something real, it doesn't need to chase relevance.' P•TAL CEO Aditya Agrawal said the refresh was about connecting beyond India while staying rooted, 'translating our craft, process and community into something our artisans can be proud to see travel the world.'

The design system was translated from the workshop itself — materials and process became the palette — so the brand could not be mistaken for a generic minimal-packaging play.

The rebrand treated artisans as the story, converting a supply chain into the brand's proof of authenticity.

Positioning moved the category question from 'which cooker is cheapest' to 'what belongs in a design-led, health-conscious kitchen', which travels across markets.

Commercial proof followed the identity: export footprint, retail, venture funding — rare for an MSME craft brand.

When a brand is rooted in a living craft, the design system can be translated from the workshop — material, process, palette — instead of borrowed from a trend deck; culture outlasts trends.

With the 2026 Blue Elephants, the rebrand now carries third-party design recognition on top of its commercial results. P•TAL continues to scale the UNESCO-recognised craft commercially — the brand says the rebrand strengthened continuity for the craft communities while its category is now perceived as a modern, health-conscious lifestyle choice by a younger, globally aware audience.
