What it had to solve
The latest chapter of PNC's 'Brilliantly Boring since 1865' platform, which reframes boring as a powerful form of financial wisdom and a symbol of reliability.
The idea
A time-traveling voice of reason talks figures on the verge of famously impulsive decisions — Pompeii, medieval leeches — out of them, one sensible choice at a time.
How it works
An anthemic hero film, 'Boring Over Time', with Chris Diamantopoulos reprising his role, directed by Craig Gillespie of MJZ; a :30 TV spot plus :15 and extended :60 executions across digital and social, running nationally on TV, CTV, OLV and paid social.
What it did
No results were reported; the campaign extends the acclaimed 'Brilliantly Boring' platform beyond banking into culture, with PNC's 160-year legacy of stability as the payoff.
Background
PNC Bank launched the latest chapter of its 'Brilliantly Boring since 1865' platform, created by agency of record Arnold Worldwide, using humour and historical hindsight to spotlight PNC's 160-year legacy of stability and disciplined decision-making.
The centrepiece, 'Boring Over Time', follows actor Chris Diamantopoulos as he travels through history offering calm, steady guidance to figures on the verge of famously impulsive decisions — fleeing Pompeii before Vesuvius erupts, thinking twice about treating disease with leeches — attempting to rewrite history one sensible decision at a time.
"We wanted to elevate the 'Brilliantly Boring' narrative beyond banking and connect it to culture in unexpected ways," said Sarah Taylor, managing director at Arnold. PNC's Dresdyn Hefferen, SVP of brand marketing, added that being "brilliantly boring" with your finances is an approach that "stands the test of time".
Why it lands
The joke inverts advertising's usual promise: instead of excitement, it sells the discipline of not making the exciting mistake.
Historical set pieces — Pompeii, medieval medicine — make 'boring' legible as wisdom rather than absence of personality.
Diamantopoulos's returning protagonist gave the platform continuity, building equity chapter over chapter.
Craig Gillespie's cinematic direction borrows feature-film craft for a bank, raising the production value against category conventions.
What you can take
For a brand whose selling point is steadiness, comedy about not acting boldly is the rare advertising where the product trait is the punchline.
Since then
The campaign ran nationally across TV, CTV, OLV and paid social, with :30, :15 and extended :60 executions. The material records no performance results; PNC framed the work as leaning into its DNA as a "smart, steady, dependable partner" as it grows into a nationally recognised financial leader.
