What it had to solve
Sell PlayStation Plus not as a catalogue but as a metaphor: why be one thing, when you can be anything?
The idea
An ordinary old man's secret basement hides relics of many game lives — the Death Stranding BB pod, Bloodborne's Saw Cleaver, Jin Sakai's mask.
How it works
Directed by Henry Hobson through MJZ with VFX by Company 3 New York, the film follows Mr. Malcolm through the city and down into his basement of collected artefacts, each drawing the viewer deeper into who this man is; the spot went live for PlayStation Plus.
What it did
No viewership or subscription figures in the source; the spot is positioned as posing the question 'Why be one thing, when you can be anything?'
Background
Sony Interactive Entertainment debuted a spot for PlayStation Plus that acts, in the brand's words, as a metaphor for the journey PlayStation can provide everyone. Rather than a montage of gamers, it stars Mr. Malcolm: at first glance any normal, unassuming man in the street.
As we follow him through the city and back to his home, the many lives he has lived surface. The camera travels through his house and down into a secret basement full of incredible objects collected from his adventures — the BB pod from Death Stranding, Bloodborne's Saw Cleaver, a Watcher from the world of Horizon, Jin Sakai's mask from Ghost of Tsushima — each artefact drawing viewers deeper into the mystery of who this man is.
The film, from adam&eveDDB and directed by Henry Hobson, hosts what the brand calls the perfect PlayStation hero: proof that anyone can experience the wonder of PlayStation — adventure, exploration, thrill. The question it leaves: why be one thing, when you can be anything?
Why it lands
A subscription catalogue needs an emotional argument, not a features list — a life half-lived in other worlds is that argument.
Choosing an unassuming older man as the hero breaks the young-gamer stereotype and widens who feels addressed.
Recognisable artefacts from PlayStation's own worlds reward fans and advertise the library at the same time.
The mystery structure — who is this man? — keeps viewers watching to the endline.
What you can take
Cast against stereotype to widen the product: making the gamer a quiet older man says 'anyone' more loudly than any demographic montage could.
Since then
The spot went live in June 2022 as the latest PlayStation Plus work from adam&eveDDB; the source records no performance figures.
