Microsoft digitizes a teen-made West African alphabet — ADLaM wins Cannes Design GP
Two Guinean brothers invented an alphabet for Pulaar in 1989; Microsoft turned it into a font and keyboard so 60M speakers could type their own language.

What it had to solve
Fulani people across West Africa speak Pulaar but historically wrote in Arabic or Latin, which cannot represent many Pulaar sounds; the language risked fading as the world went digital.
How it works
In 1989, in Nzérékoré, Guinea, brothers Abdoulaye and Ibrahima Barry — aged 10 and 14 — shut themselves in their room and drew shapes on paper until they had invented an alphabet for their native language, Fulfulde (Pulaar). Pulaar was spoken by tens of millions of Fulani people across West Africa but had never had its own writing system; people improvised with Arabic letters, and letters were routinely misread.
Decades later the handwritten alphabet, named ADLaM — an acronym meaning 'the alphabet that will prevent a people from being lost' — reached Microsoft. The company encoded it in Unicode, worked with the brothers and type designers to create the ADLaM Display typeface, and shipped it in Windows 10 (May 2019 update), Office and mobile platforms, so Pulaar speakers could type, text, email and browse in their own script.
At Cannes Lions 2023 the project won two Grand Prix — Design and Creative Business Transformation — for McCann New York and Microsoft. Microsoft's chief brand officer described the result as an entire culture now able to participate in the digital economy; the brothers reported ADLaM learning centers opening across Africa, Europe and the US, with children increasingly learning the script their older relatives created.
The campaign is remembered not as an ad but as an infrastructure decision: a company using its platform to preserve a language instead of marketing to its speakers in another tongue.
Why it lands
- It solved the actual problem — Pulaar's sounds cannot be written in Arabic or Latin — instead of raising awareness of it
- The invention already existed (two boys made it in 1989); Microsoft's creative act was giving it scale through Unicode, fonts and keyboards
- It made the alphabet available on every Windows and Office device, not just in a campaign microsite
- The result was measurable and durable: literacy materials, learning centers, and adoption by a new generation
- It reframed a technology company's role from selling software to preserving culture
What it did
ADLaM became usable on over a billion computers and phones; the project won the 2023 Cannes Lions Design Grand Prix and Creative Business Transformation Grand Prix and sparked ADLaM learning centers across Africa, Europe and the US.

The most powerful design brief is a real constraint: when an existing tool cannot express a culture, the product is not a translation layer but a new tool built around that culture's own invention.
Since then
ADLaM remains part of Windows and Microsoft 365, and the typeface work continued through the Kigelia type system covering eight African scripts. The Barry brothers continued building ADLaM literacy programs in Guinea and abroad, aiming to make the script a tool for fighting illiteracy, especially among women. The campaign's two 2023 Cannes Grand Prix wins made it a reference case for purpose-driven product design.
