What it had to solve
Bring surprise and delight back to holiday air travel for Massport and Boston Logan, in partnership with Delta.
The idea
Name the moment 'Emotional Baggage Claim' and flip it: on selected Delta flights, bags arrive on the belt wearing festive envelopes with $100 Amex gift cards.
How it works
On December 15, 2025, passengers from a random Delta flight found gift-tagged envelopes on their bags at the carousel; the activation followed a Thanksgiving edition where CEO Rich Davey greeted passengers and Delta threw in a travel voucher.
What it did
The Thanksgiving edition's success led directly to this expanded December edition, with A&G and Massport planning more 'emotional baggage' experiences the following year.
Background
Baggage claim is where travel joy goes to die — everyone stares at the same empty belt. For the 2025 holiday season, Massport and Boston Logan International Airport, working with agency Allen & Gerritsen and partner Delta Air Lines, decided to weaponize that moment: on Monday, December 15, passengers from a random Delta flight watched their bags come around the carousel with a festive envelope attached, each holding a $100 American Express gift card.
The 'Emotional Baggage Claim' giveaway was an expansion, not a one-off. A similar activation ran during the Thanksgiving travel crunch — where Massport CEO Rich Davey and a Delta representative greeted passengers in person, and one lucky traveler also received an airline ticket voucher — and its success prompted the December edition.
It was also a statement of intent: the program marked A&G's first experiential campaign since being named Massport's brand marketing and social agency of record in November, with VP creative director Jeff Marois framing it as giving travelers 'the emotional boost they need to kick off their holidays'. Massport and A&G said they plan to expand the emotional-baggage experiences in the coming year.
Why it lands
The pun does the strategic work: 'emotional baggage claim' names both the medium and the feeling it fixes.
An airport is one of the few brands that owns a captive, universally stressed moment — the activation monetizes goodwill instead of media.
Surprise-and-delight here has a repeatable structure: pick random flights, attach the gift to the bag, let the carousel do the theater.
The Thanksgiving-to-December expansion shows the idea was validated before it was scaled.
What you can take
The best owned moment is the one everyone dreads: an airport already owns the baggage-claim wait, so even a small surprise there scales into a story.
Since then
The December 15, 2025 giveaway ran on a random Delta arrival, with more 'emotional baggage' experiences planned across the following year as A&G's first work for Massport.
