Mailchimp’s 2020 annual report celebrates customers, not itself, in ‘Against All Odds’
Mailchimp’s in-house team turned its 2020 annual report into an interactive, illustrated side-scroll — a tribute to its small-business customers.
Mailchimp
What it had to solve
Mailchimp, the marketing platform for small businesses, still had to produce its 2020 annual report in a year when its own corporate milestones meant little. Its customers — shops, salons and studios fighting to survive the pandemic — had the more compelling story, and Mailchimp’s in-house team had the skills to tell it.
How it works
Annual reports are usually about the company that issues them. Mailchimp’s 2020 edition reversed that: it was a playful tour through the accomplishments, resilience and creativity of its small-business customers in the rollercoaster of a pandemic year.
Titled ‘Against All Odds’, the report was designed, art directed, illustrated, written and built entirely by Mailchimp’s in-house team as a side-scrolling interactive experience — an illustrated world of facts and customer stories rather than a conventional document of corporate figures.
The choice made the annual report emotionally meaningful at the moment it mattered: small businesses were being celebrated by the platform they depended on, in a format that showed off what the in-house team could do. The edition earned a place in the D&AD Awards archive and became an example of a brand using its own official publication as creative work.
Why it lands
- Reframing the report from company performance to customer resilience made it emotionally meaningful at the exact moment customers needed recognition.
- Doing it in-house kept voice and craft consistent end to end: design, art direction, illustration, writing and build all came from one team.
- The interactive, illustrated execution made a corporate report feel like Mailchimp’s own product — playful, approachable and unmistakably on brand.
- Celebrating the audience the company sells to strengthened loyalty with the exact people whose survival Mailchimp’s business depends on.
What it did
The report turned a routine annual obligation into a customer tribute and a showcase for the brand’s own studio. It earned a place in the D&AD Awards archive and design-press coverage, and it gave the small businesses Mailchimp depends on the starring role in the brand’s own official publication during their hardest year.
What you can take
When your company’s year is unglamorous, report your customers’ year instead: a customer tribute turns a compliance chore into brand content people want to open, and proves you exist to serve them.
Since then
The 2020 report became a documented example of customer-first corporate publishing in the D&AD Awards archive, and it sat inside a longer Mailchimp pattern of making its own channels celebrate small-business owners — the same audience its best-known campaigns kept returning to in later years.
