Kia EV9's geometric family SUV sweeps Red Dot, iF and IDEA in 2024

Kia's 'Opposites United' philosophy turns the three-row EV SUV into an upright, sculptural statement — winning top honours at all three global design awards.

What it had to solve

Three-row electric SUVs had no established design language, and the default was conservative, rounded people-movers. Kia needed a flagship expressing its new design philosophy while staying aerodynamic and family-friendly.

How it works

When Kia set out to build its first three-row electric family SUV, the category had no visual rulebook. The design team's answer was to make the EV9 the proof of 'Opposites United', Kia's design maxim: pairing sleek, sculptural surfaces with strong, confident geometry instead of the soft, rounded forms that dominate family cars.

The result is an upright, boxy silhouette with vertical headlights and crisp, flat surfaces, underpinned by the E-GMP platform's flat floor and long wheelbase. The interior strips back to essential controls, with second-row seats that swivel 180° to face the third row — turning the cabin into a more social space. Aerodynamic details such as a tapered rear and beveled bumper corners kept the upright stance efficient.

The bet was validated three times over in 2024. The EV9 took Red Dot's Best of the Best, the iF Gold Award and the IDEA Gold trophy — top honours at all three of the world's major design competitions in a single year. Juries praised exactly what was bold: Red Dot called it a clever solution to making a seven-seater both progressive and familiar, and iF said its contemporary form language made other large SUVs look antiquated.

Why it lands

  • It gave a family vehicle — the most conservative car segment — a distinct, memorable personality instead of following the rounded default.
  • The 'Opposites United' philosophy gave designers a coherent framework, so the bold exterior, minimal interior and swivelling seats all tell the same story.
  • The upright form was not just styling: it packaged real space, and aerodynamics were solved in parallel, so the idea survived engineering scrutiny.
  • Winning all three major awards in one year turned the design decision into proof of Kia's broader design transformation.

What it did

The EV9 won top honours at all three major design awards in 2024 — Red Dot Best of the Best, iF Gold and IDEA Gold, a rare triple. Red Dot praised a seven-seater that is progressive yet familiar; iF said its forms made other large SUVs look dated.

What you can take

In a category where everyone plays safe, a confident, polarising form can be the differentiator — especially when the philosophy behind it is coherent enough to quote back.

Since then

The EV9's triple sweep became a fixture of Kia's brand communications and a reference point for large electric SUVs. Its success reinforced the 'Opposites United' language across Kia's range, and the model went on sale in global markets from late 2023 as the brand's electric flagship.
