Kia needed a compact, mass-market electric SUV that felt accessible and likeable rather than gadgety, while still carrying the futuristic 'Opposites United' language of the flagship EV9 — in a smaller, cheaper car.

Apply 'Opposites United' down to the smallest detail: a compact EV where faceted surfaces, a lounge-like cabin and hidden functional tricks form one unbroken design idea.

Vertical headlights widen the stance; the windscreen is pulled far forward to open up the cabin. Inside: fabric-covered surfaces, recycled materials in natural colours, a panoramic display, a sliding centre console with a small table, reclining seats and a concealed rear windscreen wiper. Touch screens and buttons share one operating logic.

Won Red Dot: Best of the Best 2025 (Product Design), Kia's third straight EV to take the top prize after EV6 (2022) and EV9 (2024); jury: 'The outstanding thing about the Kia EV3 is that nothing stands out.'

The Kia EV3 is a compact electric SUV designed under Kia's 'Opposites United' philosophy. The brief was hard: translate the futuristic presence of the flagship EV9 into a smaller, affordable, mass-market car without making it feel cheap or gadgety. Kia's in-house team of nine designers answered with restraint — a reduced exterior language of faceted, folded surfaces and vertical headlights that visually widen the car.

Inside, the team treated the cabin as living space rather than cockpit: the windscreen is pulled far forward to create openness, surfaces are fabric-covered with recycled materials in natural colours, and a panoramic display, sliding centre console with table, reclining seats and ambient lighting create what the Red Dot jury called an almost lounge-like feeling.

The jury awarded the EV3 Red Dot: Best of the Best 2025, the competition's highest product-design distinction, specifically for consistency: 'Volume, proportions, the clear and unmistakable surfaces and details ... all of this stands up to closest scrutiny.' It is Kia's third consecutive EV to win the top award, after the EV6 (2022) and EV9 (2024), cementing design as the core of Kia's EV strategy.

It proved a flagship design language can scale down to an entry-level EV without dilution.

The jury honoured consistency itself — 'nothing stands out' — a rare criterion for a top prize.

Functional micro-inventions (hidden rear wiper, console table) showed design thinking in ordinary features.

Three consecutive Best of the Best EVs turned Kia's design-led EV strategy into a documented track record.

Consistency is itself a design statement: when every detail down to the wiper is resolved by one idea, the absence of show-off features becomes the feature.

The EV3 went on sale as Kia's volume electric model and the design win became central to its marketing. Kia continued the run: the EV4 sedan took Red Dot Best of the Best in 2026, extending the 'Opposites United' winning streak.
