KFC Hong Kong builds its flames from fried chicken to sell Hot & Spicy
To make KFC's Hot & Spicy heat visible, Ogilvy Hong Kong replaced fire itself with macro shots of crispy chicken in volcano, concert and dragon scenes.
KFC Hong Kong
What it had to solve
Hot & Spicy is one of KFC Hong Kong's signature recipes, sold on 'an explosion of flavour' from chili and sizzling spices; a print and outdoor campaign had to make that heat instantly readable and make the chicken look desirable.
How it works
KFC's Hot & Spicy recipe is built on heat, but 'spicy' is an invisible claim in a still image. Ogilvy Hong Kong solved it by replacing fire with the chicken itself: blown-up pieces of crispy fried chicken occupy the space where flames would be, so an erupting scene reads at a glance as fried chicken doing the burning.
The work began as a print and outdoor campaign, later extended with images of a volcano, concert fireworks and a fire-breathing dragon. Illusion Bangkok handled the photographic illusion, and the product close-ups were crafted closely enough that judges and viewers looked twice before realizing the 'fire' was actually the hero product.
The idea's clarity carried it through award seasons: ADFEST 2019 gave the campaign both the Press Grande Lotus and the Print Craft Grande Lotus, Ogilvy Hong Kong took two Industry Craft Lions at Cannes 2019 for the latest iteration, and a follow-up launched in May 2019 with a Game of Thrones dragon, showing the visual system could absorb new scenes without changing the thought.
Why it lands
- Heat is abstract, so the campaign gave it a literal body — the chicken itself becomes the fire.
- Filling flame space with the product makes the ad about appetite, not just spice.
- Macro craft made viewers look twice, turning a simple substitution into a memorable illusion.
- The idea was a system, not a single ad: new scenes such as a dragon could be added year after year without a new concept.
What it did
ADFEST 2019 awarded the campaign both the Press Grande Lotus and the Print Craft Grande Lotus, and the 2019 iteration earned Ogilvy Hong Kong two Lions in Industry Craft at Cannes; the same idea was extended into new scenes in May 2019, demonstrating its longevity.
What you can take
When the selling point is a sensation like heat, make the product literally the fire — one precise substitution carried print, outdoor and social.
Since then
The Hot & Spicy visual system kept earning: after the ADFEST 2019 double Grande Lotus, the 2019 dragon-led iteration collected two Industry Craft Lions at Cannes, and digital synopsis-style coverage reused the imagery widely. ADFEST cited the campaign as proof that a simple idea executed faultlessly could dominate craft categories, and the follow-up launched in May 2019 underlined how long a single strong visual thought can stay alive.
