IKEA UK was still the number-one home retailer in 2013, but sales had flattened and penetration had fallen after years of more tactical retail messaging.

Make small domestic moments feel wonderful, so IKEA's purpose could sell the whole home rather than one discounted product.

Mother built The Wonderful Everyday as a long-running platform across TV, social, retail, store launches and internal culture, using playful surreal scenes of sleep, storage, cooking and family life.

Effie Europe reported 83% sales growth since launch, 39% penetration growth, 47% ROI and GBP579 million in profit, with the highest revenue return in year ten.

By 2013, IKEA UK had a scale advantage but a fading emotional role. Effie Europe says sales had flattened, brand penetration had fallen by 29% over seven years, and consumers were shopping fewer categories while warmer competitors gained attention.

Mother London returned to IKEA's founding purpose: improving everyday life for the many. Instead of another product-and-price push, The Wonderful Everyday made ordinary home moments feel cinematic and slightly surreal, from sleep to storage to cooking.

The platform became a system rather than a single film. It shaped advertising, social, retail communications, store openings, CSR and internal culture, letting IKEA sell category after category through one human point of view.

The long run mattered. The 2025 Effie Europe case credits the platform with 83% sales growth since launch, 39% penetration growth, 60% consideration growth and GBP579 million in profit.

It solved a business problem by changing IKEA's emotional frame, not by adding a short-term promotion.

The idea was broad enough to carry 10,000 SKUs, but specific enough to make each product feel useful in real life.

The surreal tone made familiar household scenes distinctive without losing IKEA's accessible voice.

Long-term consistency turned the platform itself into an asset.

A platform can stay fresh for years when it is rooted in a durable customer truth, then expressed through many product moments instead of one campaign trick.

The platform won two Gold trophies at the 2017 Effie Awards UK, and in 2025 Effie Europe awarded the sustained-success case Gold. IKEA UK kept extending the idea into new themes as the platform entered its second decade.
