IKEA Hidden Tags turns furniture date stamps into a treasure hunt — El Ojo Grand Prix
For IKEA's 20 years in Portugal, hidden product labels became a durability proof and a hunt for the oldest IKEA piece — El Ojo 2025 Direct Grand Prix.

What it had to solve
For IKEA's 20 years in Portugal, the brand faced a persistent myth questioning the durability of its furniture; the anniversary campaign had to prove the products last using only what already existed.
How it works
In 2025 IKEA marked 20 years in Portugal, and the anniversary brief was to confront a stubborn myth that IKEA furniture does not last. Nearly every IKEA product carries a hidden tag with its name, origin, identification code and production date — information nobody was invited to read.
Agency Uzina turned that hidden detail into the medium. The campaign asked Portugal to find the oldest IKEA piece in the country, using the hidden labels as the clue system, and turned the search into a national treasure hunt about durability. Consumers responded with stories of furniture that had survived moves, children and even relationships, which inspired the campaign line: 'if only love lasted as long as IKEA furniture.'
The hunt became IKEA Portugal's most successful campaign. At El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2025 it won the Direct Grand Prix with a unanimous jury, plus a Gold and four Silvers across Creative Data, Innovation and Brand Experience & Activation; it was named the Best Local Idea of Portugal, and IKEA was crowned Best Advertiser of the country.
Why it lands
- The proof was already inside the product: the date-stamped hidden tag made durability a fact customers could verify themselves, not a brand claim.
- Turning the search into a national hunt created participation instead of exposure — people went home to check their own furniture.
- The anniversary frame gave the idea a deadline and a story: 20 years in Portugal, measured by the oldest piece still standing.
- Real customer stories supplied the emotional hook — furniture outlasting relationships — which the tagline then crystallized.
What it did
The hunt became IKEA Portugal's most successful campaign: Gran Ojo Direct (won by unanimous jury) plus one Gold and four Silvers at El Ojo 2025, Best Local Idea, and Best Advertiser of Portugal for IKEA.
What you can take
Mine the product's own hidden details: the date stamp inside every piece became the medium, so the proof of durability was physically in the product — no message needed, just an invitation to look.
Since then
IKEA Portugal was named Best Advertiser at El Ojo Local Portugal 2025 — the same recognition it had won exactly 20 years earlier, at its market entry — while Uzina became Portugal's Best Agency and Best Independent Agency. The campaign entered El Ojo's case library as the 2025 Direct Grand Prix and is cited as one of the most awarded pieces of Portuguese creativity of the festival.
