Spain's neighbourhood bars are cultural institutions, but independent owners face rising costs, changing habits and competition from large hospitality chains that can offer training, marketing and scale a single bar never could.

Spain counts 163 bars named Pepe, 156 Manolo, 144 Paco — Heineken linked these strangers who share a name ('tocayos') into one platform with franchise-level support.

Heineken and LePub launched the Tocayos platform (tocayos-inc.heineken.com) in March 2026: bars sharing a name could join for training, visibility and business support. A film featuring real owners — Pacos, Pepes and Luises across Spain — introduced the network as a collective movement.

The campaign earned €677K in earned media value, extensive national and international coverage, and participating venues grew sales +20% year-on-year; it won a Cannes Lions 2026 B2B Gold and a Titanium shortlist.

Spanish neighbourhood bars are where communities gather, but the independent ones are squeezed: rising operating costs, remote work, and chains that come with training programmes, marketing machines and buying power. Heineken, whose business depends on these bars surviving, looked for a way to help that wasn't charity.

The insight was a census quirk. According to the Spanish Confederation of Hospitality Businesses, the country has 163 bars named Pepe, 156 Manolo, 144 Paco, 99 Luna and 53 Luis — hundreds of strangers who already share the most personal thing a business has: its name. In Spanish, namesakes are 'tocayos'.

LePub turned that coincidence into infrastructure. The Tocayos platform, launched in March 2026, lets same-named bars join a network offering training, increased visibility and business support — franchise-level advantages with no franchise fees and no loss of identity. The launch film starred real owners from different regions who share names and, it turns out, the same devotion to their bars.

Tocayos generated €677K in earned media value and coverage across Spain and international trade press, and participating venues saw sales grow +20% year-on-year. The work won a Gold Lion in Creative B2B at Cannes Lions 2026 and was shortlisted for the Dan Wieden Titanium Lion.

The network is built on something the bars already own, so joining costs nothing and changes nothing about who they are.

It converts Heineken's dependence on independent bars into visible, useful support — brand purpose with a receipt.

A shared name is a ready-made identity and story, giving hundreds of strangers an instant collective brand.

Franchise-style services delivered as a platform scale to hundreds of bars without Heineken owning any of them.

A coincidence hiding in plain sight can be organised into an asset: what these bars already shared — a name — became the franchise they couldn't afford.

After winning Gold in Creative B2B and a Titanium shortlist at Cannes Lions 2026, Tocayos stands as Heineken's flagship hospitality-support platform in Spain, strengthening the brand's ties to the bar trade while helping independent venues compete with chains.
