Buffalo Zine No. 16 produced its entire issue inside New York's Chelsea Hotel
For issue 16, the independent magazine moved into the just-reopened Chelsea Hotel for a summer and made the edition entirely within its walls.
Buffalo Zine
What it had to solve
Buffalo Zine's sixteenth issue took the Chelsea Hotel as its subject: a legendary New York residence and refuge for cult artists and rare individuals, where every room carries its own legacy of stories, anecdotes and dark legends. The hotel had just reopened after roughly a decade of construction, so the building itself was news.
How it works
Buffalo Zine, the independent fashion and culture magazine, built its sixteenth issue around New York's legendary Chelsea Hotel — a residence and refuge for an extended list of cult artists and rare individuals, where every room carries its own legacy of stories, anecdotes and dark legends. The hotel had just reopened after roughly a decade of stalled construction.
Rather than write about the building from outside, the Buffalo team moved into it and produced the entire issue over the summer. Rooms, residents and daily life inside the hotel became the working material of the magazine, so the finished edition was less a report on the Chelsea Hotel than a record made from inside it.
The issue was published as a 420-page, fabric-bound book for the autumn/winter 2022–23 season and was filed in the D&AD awards archive under magazine and newspaper design, where it stands as an example of editorial production using a place's real atmosphere as its raw material.
Why it lands
- Making the issue inside the hotel turns the magazine's own production process into the content.
- Every room's stories become reachable by proximity rather than by appointment, changing what editors can capture.
- A just-reopened landmark gives the edition built-in news value and public curiosity before a single page is sold.
- The constraint — one summer, one building, one complete issue — forces a personal, place-bound edit that a normal production schedule would not produce.
What it did
The edition came out as a 420-page, fabric-bound hardcover, and the work was filed in the D&AD awards archive under magazine and newspaper design.
What you can take
When a place is the story, making the work inside it changes what the work can hold: the editors lived the subject, so the issue could capture encounters no outside interview could reach.
Since then
The hotel edition was published as Buffalo Zine No. 16 for autumn/winter 2022–23 and entered the D&AD awards archive under magazine and newspaper design. It sits in a run of the magazine's location-based issues, each built on the idea that the circumstances of production can be the story itself.
