Google's Project Genie turns prompts into walkable AI worlds — Cannes Digital Craft GP

DeepMind's Genie 3 world model becomes a web app where users sketch, explore and remix navigable 3D worlds; it wins the 2026 Cannes Digital Craft Grand Prix.

What it had to solve

In August 2025 Google DeepMind previewed Genie 3, a general-purpose world model that generates diverse, interactive environments — but only trusted testers could use it, and the public kept asking when they could try it.

How it works

In August 2025 Google DeepMind previewed Genie 3, a general-purpose world model able to generate diverse, interactive environments. Even in early form it impressed trusted testers, but it stayed out of the public's hands — the recurring question was when ordinary users could try it.

In January 2026 Google answered with Project Genie, an experimental research prototype in Google Labs. Built from Genie 3 plus the Nano Banana Pro image model and Gemini, the web app lets U.S. Google AI Ultra subscribers (18+) type or draw a prompt, drop in an image, and step into a navigable 3D world.

The experience is built around three capabilities: world sketching (design the world and your perspective before entering), world exploration (the environment generates the path ahead in real time as you move), and world remixing (start from curated worlds in a gallery and build on top). Early limits included 60-second generations and imperfect physics.

At Cannes Lions 2026 Project Genie won the Digital Craft Grand Prix. Jury president Andres Ordonez, global chief creative officer of McCann, called it a tool that empowers creatives to become better storytellers and create worlds that don't exist — the model as co-pilot, the human as driver.

Why it lands

  • It converted a research model into a hands-on experience, so people could understand a world model by walking through one.
  • Text-plus-image prompting lowered the skill bar: no 3D tools, no code, just words and pictures.
  • The gallery and remixing made the prototype a community canvas rather than a one-off demo.
  • Winning a craft award recognized the interface and product design, not just the underlying AI.

What it did

Won the Digital Craft Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2026; the jury described it as a first-of-its-kind experience that empowers creatives to become better storytellers and create worlds that don't exist.

What you can take

When a breakthrough model is invisible to its audience, turn it into an experience: a playable prototype lets people understand a technology by touching it, not reading about it.

Since then

Project Genie opened the door to Genie-based creative tools; the team said likely uses include prototyping video game concepts, visualizing film scenes and classroom exploration of professions, with plans to extend worlds beyond 60 seconds and add more control. The Cannes Digital Craft Grand Prix made it a reference case for turning frontier AI into a creative platform.
