What it had to solve
Google India was introducing AI Mode in Search — conversational search with follow-ups — and needed a story that made not knowing the question the point.
The idea
Start with a fear, not a feature: a student asks AI Mode how to tell his father he wants a café, and the question grows as he thinks.
How it works
Film by McCann India, conceptualised and written by Prasoon Joshi: exam-bound Karan asks AI Mode how to begin the café conversation with his father; each answer raises a better next question, from who the customers would be to how to finance it.
What it did
Launched as the introduction campaign for AI Mode in Google Search India; the write-up frames it against classic one-query search ads — no performance figures given.
Background
Google India’s campaign for AI Mode in Search, ‘Samjhe. Samjhaaye. Raah Dikhaye.’, was developed with McCann India and written by Prasoon Joshi. It opens far from technology: Karan, a young man preparing for competitive exams, carries another ambition — opening his own café — and does not know how to tell his father.
Instead of a product demonstration, Karan turns to AI Mode with a human uncertainty: how should he approach the conversation, where should he begin? The film’s engine is that the original question keeps changing as he thinks — from the conversation itself to who around him might need a café, what it should offer, where financing could come from. The behaviour being sold is the follow-up question.
The write-up positions the film against search advertising’s traditional shape — one query, one answer — arguing the product story works because it never explains the technology: AI Mode gives Karan room to keep going, and the viewer understands conversational search by watching a life decision unfold one step at a time.
Why it lands
AI Mode’s difference is the conversation, so the film needed a problem that cannot be solved in a single typed query.
A family conversation is a universally felt fear in India, making an AI feature emotionally legible before it is technically explained.
The café dream shows the product’s real value: helping a user who does not know the right question find the next one.
Casting the AI as a thinking partner rather than an answer machine separates AI Mode from ordinary Search advertising.
What you can take
For products that change user behaviour, dramatise the behaviour — the question changing mid-conversation — rather than the interface.
Since then
The film launched as the introduction of AI Mode for Google Search in India, with Google’s official announcement detailing the feature. No campaign performance figures were disclosed in the source.
