What it had to solve
Create Genesis's launch campaign for Europe — the brand chose to celebrate time well spent instead of celebrating cars.
The idea
Launch without launching: the film sits in ocean quiet with champion free diver Arnaud Jerald, and the 'We Come to You' service delivers the car to him.
How it works
A film by Frédéric Planchon with music by Ólafur Arnalds, featuring world-champion free diver Arnaud Jerald (112-metre record), backed by digital, social, OOH, print, a Swiss Alps PR stunt and media test drives across Europe.
What it did
The film anchored Genesis's first fully integrated European launch; the material reports no sales or viewership figures.
Background
To launch Genesis in Europe, Innocean Berlin went against the grain of summer 2021, when sporting events filled every break with aggressive car advertising. Instead of celebrating cars, the campaign celebrated time well spent: 'Free Diver', shot by Frédéric Planchon with a score by Ólafur Arnalds, follows world-champion free diver Arnaud Jerald — holder of a 112-metre world record — through the tranquility of the ocean.
The film is the service pitch. As Jerald lingers over a magical, almost spiritual moment on the seabed, Genesis delivers its GV80 directly to him so he doesn't miss a second of it — dramatizing 'We Come to You', the brand's offer to bring test drives or servicing to a customer's home or workplace. Dominic Chambers, head of marketing and communications at Genesis Motor Europe, framed the film as proof of the brand's ethos of respecting customers' time.
The launch was supported by a fully integrated campaign: extensive digital and social presence, out-of-home, print, a PR stunt in the Swiss Alps, and rounded-out media test drives across Europe.
Why it lands
The launch strategy is legible in one line: enter a crowded, loud market by being the quietest thing in it.
The product benefit ('We Come to You') is narrated inside the film's plot rather than asserted over it.
Casting a real 112-metre world-record free diver gives the calm its spectacle without a single engine shot.
A prestige director-and-composer pairing (Planchon, Arnalds) signals luxury positioning without saying the word.
What you can take
For an unknown entrant, the counter-programming move is volume zero: when every rival shouts, calm itself becomes the position.
Since then
The film anchored Genesis's European introduction from June 2021, with the integrated rollout — Alps stunt, OOH, print, test drives — continuing through the summer. The material reports no market results.
