What it had to solve
Launch One Key with the stance that a traveller is anyone who goes anywhere, across films, OOH, audio, digital, social and PR.
The idea
A world of travellers, zero human faces: luggage carries every character, set to 'Fratelli Chase' from The Goonies
How it works
Somesuch's Kim Gehrig directed with Emmanuel Lubezki as DP, bringing what the announcement calls her signature honesty and wit; campaign photography for OOH and digital elevated everyday travel alongside destination travel through mixed representation, abstraction and a sense of motion.
What it did
The source reports no results figures. The film anchored a multi-channel launch — films, OOH, audio, digital, social and PR — for a programme that lets members earn and redeem rewards across three travel brands.
Background
On 18 July 2023 Expedia Group announced One Key, pitched as the most flexible loyalty programme in travel: members earn and redeem rewards across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, plus member savings and benefits.
To launch it, W+K Portland teamed with Somesuch director Kim Gehrig on 'The Travelers', an anthemic film that shows a whole world of travel and travellers without ever showing a human face — luggage stands in for people, telling us who they are and where they might be going.
The film is punctuated by 'Fratelli Chase', the track featured in The Goonies, and presents an honest depiction of the highs, downs and unexpected twists of travel. Emmanuel Lubezki, recognised for his innovative use of natural lighting, served as DP.
Around the film, campaign photography elevated everyday travel to the same consideration as destination travel, rooted in interesting perspectives, a mix of representation and abstraction, and a sense of motion.
Why it lands
The no-faces device makes the film about anyone: every viewer can cast themselves, which is the point of a programme spanning three brands.
Casting luggage as the protagonist reframes ordinary trips as worthy of the same awe as bucket-list travel, matching One Key's 'a traveler is anyone who goes anywhere' stance.
The craft lineup — Kim Gehrig directing, Emmanuel Lubezki on DP, a Goonies needle-drop — signals a brand-scale launch rather than a points explainer.
What you can take
When the product is a points mechanic, sell the identity it enables: defining 'traveller' wide enough to cover everyone turns a loyalty scheme into a cultural statement.
Since then
The source is the launch announcement of 18 July 2023; it reports no membership sign-ups, booking or campaign-performance figures.
