What it had to solve
A society hit by the confinement needed journalism that reflected daily life under lockdown, not just case counts — and the newspaper needed a collaborator who could carry it visually.
The idea
Record one household's confinement obsessively — statistics of habits and mood — and publish it daily as a visual column: the lockdown as a portrait in data.
How it works
The Errea team — Javier, Pablo and Cristina Errea, Alberto Molina and Maialen Irujo — recorded punctually and obsessively all kinds of statistics about themselves, their families and cohabitants, showing how and how much habits changed and their mood, and produced a daily visual column published in Diario de Navarra for 53 consecutive days.
What it did
The column ran all 53 days of confinement in Diario de Navarra and won a Member Club Gold Award in Graphic Communication at ADC*E Annual 2021.
Background
During the confinement in Spain — between March and May, 53 consecutive days — the design studio Errea produced a daily visual column published in Diario de Navarra. It was, in the team's words, a way of collaborating with a newsroom and a society hit by the situation.
The diary is a portrait in data of confinement. The team recorded punctually, obsessively, all kinds of statistics about themselves, their families and cohabitants — showing how and how much their habits changed, and their mood: themselves.
The project later won a Member Club Gold Award in Design Graphic Communication at ADC*E's Annual 2021 edition.
Why it lands
Lockdown affected every household differently; one honestly recorded household gives readers a mirror instead of another aggregate statistic.
Publishing daily matched the rhythm of the confinement itself — the format carried the feeling of endless, repetitive days.
Turning mood and habits into data made isolation shareable with a mass newspaper audience without a single victim narrative.
What you can take
When the news is too big to grasp, chart the smallest sample honestly: one household's obsessive data can carry a whole society's portrait.
Since then
The column ran through all 53 days of confinement and was later awarded ADC*E Member Club Gold in Graphic Communication at Annual 2021.
