Garuda Rakshak: a drone named for a myth reunites children lost in a 663M-person Kumbh
At the 2025 Maha Kumbh, DSP Mutual Fund funded an offline drone rescue system that traced 78% of lost wristband-wearing children in under five minutes.

What it had to solve
The Purna Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj (January 2025) drew 663 million people — the largest gathering in human history. Mobile networks die at that density, and past Kumbhs saw more than 250,000 children separated from their families. DSP Mutual Fund's 'Invest for Good' philosophy needed to become something real.
How it works
In January 2025, the Purna Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj drew 663 million pilgrims — officially the largest gathering of human beings in history. For DSP Mutual Fund, an asset manager whose purpose line is 'Invest for Good', the festival was a problem a finance brand had no natural reason to touch: at that density, mobile networks don't slow down, they die — and past Kumbhs had seen more than a quarter of a million children separated from their families.
With Dentsu Creative India and drone partner Falco Robotics, DSP built Garuda Rakshak, named after Garuda, the divine bird that guards pilgrims in Hindu myth. The system ran entirely offline: children wore low-cost ID wristbands; parents tapped the band at a Lost & Found kiosk; a radio method from 1970s marine navigation, transmitting under 1 kilobyte of data, reached the wristband and returned its position; a drone flew at up to 80 km/h, hovered over the child and dropped a giant coloured marker. Rescue teams simply ran to the marker.
The result was measured in reunions: 78% of wristband-wearing children were traced in under five minutes and every one of them was brought back to their families. Judges noticed what DSP had done — the campaign took the INNOVA Grande, an Effective Lotus Gold and a Lotus Roots award at ADFEST 2026, and DSP Mutual Fund was named ADFEST 2026 Advertiser of the Year.
The transferable idea isn't the drone; it's choosing a technology because it fails differently. Where everyone assumed connectivity, the team assumed its absence and built around the oldest reliable signal. And the brand paid for the system itself, so 'Invest for Good' was something a parent in a crowd of millions could literally look up to.
Why it lands
- It treated a brand-purpose line as a contract: DSP funded working rescue infrastructure instead of an ad about caring.
- It picked 1970s marine radio precisely because modern networks fail at scale, turning an obsolete channel into the unfair advantage.
- Naming the drone Garuda anchored foreign technology in the pilgrims' own mythology, so the solution spoke the crowd's language.
- It moved the brand far outside its category, earning attention no category-adjacent purpose campaign could.
- Measurable outcomes — 78% found in five minutes, every wristband child reunited — made the idea auditable, not just emotional.
What it did
78% of wristband-wearing children were traced in under five minutes and every one of them was reunited with family. The work swept ADFEST 2026 — INNOVA Grande, Effective Lotus Gold and Lotus Roots — and made DSP Mutual Fund ADFEST 2026 Advertiser of the Year.
What you can take
When the environment kills your default channel, go backward to tech it can't break — 1970s marine radio beat 5G at 663M people — and let the brand fund the actual fix, not the ad about it.
Since then
Garuda Rakshak ran from Lost & Found kiosks across the festival's 4,000 hectares and reunited every wristband-wearing child it was activated for. After the event, the recognition arrived: at ADFEST 2026 the campaign took the INNOVA Grande, an Effective Lotus Gold and a Lotus Roots award, and DSP Mutual Fund was named ADFEST 2026 Advertiser of the Year. The offline-first radio-and-drone architecture remains a template for search-and-rescue wherever crowds kill mobile networks.
