DHL really delivers a parcel 'yesterday' — Tokyo to LA across the date line

A grandfather's forgotten birthday gift leaves Tokyo on Jan 26 and lands in LA on Jan 25, so DHL proves it can deliver 'yesterday'.

The ideaShip a birthday gift from Tokyo on Jan 26 so it physically arrives in Los Angeles on Jan 25 — proving DHL can really deliver 'yesterday' across the date line.substantial

What it had to solve

DHL Express MENA wanted to dramatize that it is not just fast but capable of the seemingly impossible — delivering a parcel when the customer needs it 'by yesterday' — in a way that feels true rather than a CGI fantasy.

How it works

DHL's 'Yesterdelivery' campaign, created by Horizon FCB Dubai for DHL Express MENA, is built on one real, documented shipment. In the story, a grandfather living in Tokyo realizes he has missed his granddaughter's birthday on January 25 in Los Angeles, so he hurries a gift into DHL's network on January 26 — and because Tokyo is 16 hours and one calendar day ahead of Los Angeles, the parcel is delivered on January 25, her actual birthday.

The film shows the whole chain as it really happened: the courier collecting the box in Tokyo, the parcel moving through vans and planes, and the delivery at the granddaughter's door across the International Date Line. Crews filmed on two continents in two days, synchronizing schedules so the parcel flew on the exact flight slot that would make the date-line arithmetic work.

The idea reframes DHL's core promise — speed and reliability — as the ability to deliver 'yesterday', and it connects the service to an everyday emotional moment: the missed birthday gift. The spot was released on DHL Middle East and Africa's channels on April 5, 2024, with the tagline 'Delivered yesterday'.

Because the stunt was real rather than visual effects, the film doubled as evidence, and the work was recognized with a Silver Loerie at the 2024 Loerie Awards in the PR & Media Communication category.

Why it lands

  • The International Date Line let DHL make a literally impossible-sounding claim — 'delivered yesterday' — that is actually true.
  • Anchoring the logistics feat in a grandfather missing a birthday gives an abstract speed claim an emotional reason to matter.
  • Performing the shipment for real meant the film needed no CGI trickery; the documented event was the proof.
  • The one-word title 'Yesterdelivery' compressed the whole promise into a memorable term that media and viewers could repeat.

What it did

The campaign turned 'delivered yesterday' from a boast into a documented fact — the package in the film was really delivered before its ship date — and earned a Silver Loerie 2024 in PR & Media Communication for Horizon FCB Dubai.

What you can take

Prove logistics claims with a real, verifiable operation rather than a metaphor: the date line let DHL demonstrate 'delivering yesterday' and turn speed into an emotional story.

Since then

The stunt became the campaign's centerpiece: a real parcel, a real date line and a heartwarming story that proved DHL's operational reach. The Loerie Awards 2024 gave Horizon FCB Dubai a Silver in PR & Media Communication for the work, and the campaign circulated widely in advertising press as an example of turning a service fact into a transportable story.
