Landfall gives Content Warning away for 24h — 6.6M free claims become 1M paid copies

A co-op horror about filming friends and going viral on SpöökTube is free for one day, flooding every feed — then sells 1M copies at $8.

Landfall

The ideaDesign the game around going viral — friends film panic for in-game SpöökTube — then give it away free for 24 hours so play floods the feeds that sell day twosubstantial

What it had to solve

April 1 is 'Landfall Day' at Landfall, a small Swedish indie studio with a habit of surprise gag games: in 2018 it paused Totally Accurate Battle Simulator to make a parody battle royale that proved so popular the studio supported it for years. For Content Warning, a co-op horror made by a handful of people, the team bet its launch on letting anyone claim the game free for the first 24 hours before switching to an $8 price.

How it works

April 1 is 'Landfall Day' at Landfall, a small Swedish indie studio that built a habit of surprise gag games: in 2018 it paused Totally Accurate Battle Simulator to make Totally Accurate Battlegrounds, a parody battle royale that proved so popular the studio supported it for years. For Content Warning, a co-op horror made by a handful of people, Landfall decided to launch on April Fools' 2024 — free to claim for the first 24 hours, then $8.

The game's premise is the clever part: friends record each other's panicking antics and upload the footage to an in-game viral-video site called SpöökTube, chasing view counts the way real creators chase fame. Making it free for a day meant every group that grabbed it became a clip factory within hours — TikTok, YouTube, Twitter and Twitch flooded with Content Warning footage, and CEO Wilhelm Nylund said people woke up 'bombarded with footage,' creating the sense that this was something happening right now.

The numbers justified the nerves: over six million copies were claimed free (Landfall later put it at 6.6 million), and when the price returned the first day sold over 100,000 paid copies and the second 125,000. Within a week Content Warning had cracked 700,000 paid copies; two weeks after launch Landfall announced one million paid sales on top of the giveaway, with the game still sitting in Steam's top sellers.

Why it lands

  • The free window removed every barrier at the exact moment the game needed a critical mass of players recording each other.
  • Gameplay mimics content creation — film, upload, chase views — so playing the game manufactured the clips that advertised it.
  • The 24-hour deadline created urgency: Discord groups and feeds told everyone to claim it before the clock ran out.
  • The switch to $8 turned millions of free players' friend groups into day-two sales channels.

What it did

Over six million copies were claimed in the free window (Landfall later put it at 6.6 million). Paid sales passed 100,000 on day one, 125,000 the next day, 700,000 within a week, and Landfall announced one million paid copies roughly two weeks after launch, with the game still in Steam's top sellers.

What you can take

Give the thing away to the people who make it spread: when gameplay is content creation, a 24-hour free window seeds the exact clips that sell the next day's copies

Since then

Landfall kept updating Content Warning after the paid switch and treated the launch as an informed bet rather than a lucky break — it had rehearsed the pattern on earlier 'Landfall Day' giveaways such as Totally Accurate Battlegrounds. Its CEO admitted the risk was real: with six million free copies generating no direct income, the team did not know anyone would pay once the clock reset. The result — roughly one million paid copies within two weeks on top of 6.6 million free claims — made the 24-hour free launch a reference point for seeding paid sales through playable content.
