Coke Studio PH spins Zoetrope vinyl so its music can be seen as well as heard

Coke Studio pressed 300 Zoetrope records whose artwork animates as they spin — turning each song's artist lineup into a collectible audio-visual object.

What it had to solve

Coke Studio Philippines, in its seventh year, brought Filipino musicians together to create original tracks — but by then streaming and artist collaborations had made the format feel familiar to Gen Z. The generation was nostalgic too: per the case's RIAA reference, vinyl outsold CDs in 2022 and 2023 for the first time since 1988, with fans using records as badges and wall art. With a US$120,000 budget, 300 copies and eight weeks, the brand needed a fresh object that would deepen the bond between fans and an upcoming season of songs.

How it works

Coke Studio Philippines had spent seven seasons doing one thing well: bringing musicians from different genres and generations together to record original songs. That format had made the platform famous, but by 2024 collaboration itself no longer felt novel — and Gen Z, the audience the brand needed next, was instead reaching for physical formats as a badge of music taste. Vinyl had outsold CDs in 2022 and 2023 for the first time since 1988, and young fans treated records as art to hang on dorm walls.

The creative answer was to make the vinyl itself tell the story of the collaboration. Ogilvy Singapore and WPP Open X used the Zoetrope technique, one of animation's earliest forms: artwork printed on the disc appears to move as the record spins. Each of the 300 limited-edition records features one song from Season 7, and the illustration is layered so every Filipino artist who collaborated on the track is represented — peppered with easter eggs, secret messages and shoutouts that reward attentive fans.

Illustrators Vanilla Chi, Rakhmat Jaka and Mathieu Labrecque designed the discs, which were pressed as 12-inch polycarbonate picture records and framed in recyclable acrylic. The records were unboxed by the artists themselves, sent to publishers, DJs and superfans, and stocked in local record stores, while clips from them ran on Spotify — turning the collectible into content as well as product.

The results, reported in the award case, show the object worked as a brand event: Coke Studio's brand perception among Gen Z rose 40%, mentions on social platforms rose 63% with 99% positive sentiment, coverage reached over 65 countries, and all Season 7 tracks doubled their Spotify plays. The work became an ADFEST 2025 winner entry and a LIA 2024 Finalist in the experiential category.

Why it lands

  • It upgraded a physical format Gen Z already loved instead of inventing a new channel, so the object carried cultural meaning before the campaign began.
  • The Zoetrope animation made an abstract claim — 'music brings artists together' — physically visible on an object fans could own and film.
  • Easter eggs and per-artist layers rewarded close attention, turning fans into discoverers who would broadcast the work for the brand.
  • A scarce run of 300 objects made the launch an event: every copy placed in stores was collected within three days, generating urgency and coverage.

What it did

According to the award case, brand perception of Coke Studio among Gen Z rose 40%, mentions on X, Instagram and TikTok rose 63% with 99% positive sentiment, and media in over 65 countries covered the release. Every record placed in stores was collected within three days, radio and music-trade mentions ran 70% above other Coke Studio campaigns, and all Season 7 tracks doubled their Spotify plays. The work was an ADFEST 2025 winner entry and a LIA 2024 Finalist.

What you can take

Nostalgia is a material, not a message: use a classic format's mechanics to make your own story visible — here, collaboration — and fans get an object worth keeping, spinning and sharing.

Since then

Every record placed in stores was collected within three days; the case credits 40% higher brand perception among Gen Z, 63% more social mentions, 99% positive sentiment and doubled Spotify plays for all Season 7 tracks, with coverage in over 65 countries. The project was an ADFEST 2025 winner entry (Design, Limited Special Editions) and a LIA 2024 Finalist in Non-Traditional/Experiential — cementing Coke Studio's shift from a music-making platform into a brand that produces objects, moments and content around its artists.
