What it had to solve
Founded in 1976, Bosideng was trusted but seen as a 'grandpa jacket' brand by younger Chinese consumers. Its strategy consultancy advised concentrating all resources on one belief — 'Bosideng equals down jackets' — and proving that claim to a young, global audience.
The idea
Prove 'down-jacket expert' on fashion's biggest stage: an ink-wash New York runway where Hollywood stars wear the jackets and rewrite a 'grandpa brand' image.
How it works
On September 12, 2018, Bosideng showed its Spring/Summer 2019 collection at NYFW's main venue, Gallery I at Spring Studios: ink-wash prints, classical Chinese motifs and a '牖' window-lattice theme, styled by celebrity stylist Law Roach. Victoria's Secret angel Alessandra Ambrosio opened and closed the show, while Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Renner watched from the front row — Hathaway in a Bosideng jacket.
What it did
The show turned Bosideng into a national talking point and a symbol of the 'China-chic' revival. According to later reporting, its mid-to-high-end product sales grew more than 500%, retail sales exceeded RMB 10 billion, consumer awareness reached 93%, and the company's stock rose 132.8%.
Background
For most of its four decades, Bosideng was the down jacket Chinese parents bought — reliable, warm and decidedly unfashionable. In 2018 the brand decided the perception itself was the enemy, and that the fix was to show, not tell: it took its down jackets to the main venue of New York Fashion Week.
The September 12 show at Gallery I at Spring Studios was built entirely around Chinese aesthetics: ink-wash landscape prints, classical window-lattice and garden motifs, a '牖' theme drawn from the window between rooms in classical architecture, with metallic and color-blocked modern accents. Stylist Law Roach — known for styling Celine Dion and Zendaya — directed the looks, and Victoria's Secret angel Alessandra Ambrosio opened and closed the runway in her first show for a Chinese brand.
The front row made the statement undeniable: Anne Hathaway wore a Bosideng ink-wash jacket and said she wanted many of the pieces; Jeremy Renner sat beside her; fashion influencers Leandra Medine, Olivia Palermo and Danielle Bernstein attended, alongside Chinese figures including Wendi Deng. Media coverage multiplied because the contrast — a 'grandpa brand' on the world's fashion stage — was itself the story.
The strategy behind the spectacle was concentration: instead of diversifying, the brand's advisors pushed it to pour everything into the down-jacket identity and prove expertise publicly. The results followed: mid-to-high-end sales grew more than 500%, retail revenue passed RMB 10 billion, awareness reached 93%, and the stock rose 132.8% — a turnaround widely credited to the NYFW pivot.
Why it lands
It picked one authoritative stage: NYFW's main venue made the 'down jacket expert' claim visible to the world rather than to China alone.
Credible outsiders carried the proof: Hollywood stars and a Victoria's Secret angel wearing the product said what the brand could not say itself.
The collection dramatized the claim: ink-wash prints and window-lattice motifs made Chinese craft the design story, fusing 'China-chic' with 'expert'.
It concentrated instead of diversifying, turning a decades-old asset — everyone knows Bosideng — into the entire strategy.
What you can take
When the brand is the problem, change the stage: one authoritative, unmissable venue plus credible outsiders wearing the product can rewrite a decades-old perception faster than any slogan.
Since then
Bosideng kept compounding the moment: in October 2018 it launched designer collaborations with American, French and Italian designers, and the focused 'down jacket expert' strategy carried retail revenue past RMB 10 billion with the stock up 132.8%. The NYFW show became the visible hinge of the revival and one of the most-cited examples of Chinese legacy-brand rejuvenation; later seasons brought a Milan Fashion Week appearance and, in November 2019, a Jean Paul Gaultier collaboration.
