Black Thunder AI recreates the crunch Oda Nobunaga would have made eating its bar
Black Thunder trained a custom AI on 100 people's chewing sounds to recreate warlord Oda Nobunaga's crunch — released as a YouTube short and Spotify audio ad.
Yuraku Seika
What it had to solve
Black Thunder, the crunchy chocolate bar Yuraku Seika launched in 1994, reached its 30th anniversary in 2024 and marked it with '30 no Rakurai', thirty playful projects spread across the year. March 9 reads as 'zaku' in Japanese, so the brand wanted to own 'ZakuZaku equals Black Thunder' — yet a texture can only be advertised visually, and a signature sound cannot be shown at all.
How it works
Black Thunder is the crunchy chocolate bar Yuraku Seika has sold since 1994, known for a signature 'ZakuZaku' (crunchy-crunchy) texture. When the brand turned 30 in 2024, the company ran '30 no Rakurai' — thirty projects intended to deliver lightning-grade fun across the anniversary year. Because March 9 reads as 'zaku' in Japanese, the brand used that date to stage a sound-based idea: make people hear that 'ZakuZaku means Black Thunder'.
The idea answered a question nobody had asked: what would Oda Nobunaga — the warlord famous for sweets — sound like biting a Black Thunder bar? Hakuhodo built a custom 'Black Thunder ZakuZaku AI' trained on the chewing sounds and facial images of 100 people. The AI learned how skull structure shapes chewing tone, then combined data from subjects whose features resembled Nobunaga's sharp jaw, high nose and prominent cheekbones to synthesize his crunch. Dentist Kōsuke Nakano reviewed the output and confirmed the high, resonant sound matched what that skeleton would predict.
The recreated sound became the campaign itself: a short film released March 6, 2025 on Black Thunder's official YouTube channel and kept online until the end of August, plus an audio advertisement streamed on Spotify for one week, both tied into the anniversary project site. Instead of claiming crunchiness in a picture, the brand let people listen to a famous sweet tooth enjoy the bar — a premise built for curiosity and sharing.
The work was recognized at the 65th ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS 2025 with a Bronze in the Radio & Audio Advertising category (Audio Execution) and a Craft Award for its planning, with Hakuhodo credited as agency. Japanese tech and PR media covered the stunt as an example of sound-based branding powered by generative AI, showing how a texture claim could become an audio property worth talking about.
Why it lands
- It gave an invisible quality — texture — a shareable form by turning sound itself into the creative asset.
- The AI was not a gimmick bolted on: it existed to answer a specific 'what if', which made the technique news in its own right.
- Choosing Nobunaga, a beloved historical sweet tooth, handed the brand a character with built-in curiosity and meme potential.
- A dentist's expert analysis turned a playful stunt into a claim with authority, reinforcing that the synthesized crunch was realistic.
What it did
The campaign made the brand's core texture an audible, ownable idea and earned industry recognition: at the 65th ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS 2025 it took a Bronze in Radio & Audio Advertising (Audio Execution) plus a Craft Award for planning, credited to agency Hakuhodo, and Japanese tech and PR media covered the AI stunt. No sales figures were published.
What you can take
When a product's core promise is a sensation, don't describe it — reproduce it through a character worth imagining, and let the technique add credibility and news value without becoming the point.
Since then
The short ran on Black Thunder's official YouTube from March through August 2025 and the audio spot streamed on Spotify during launch week, as part of the 30th-anniversary '30 no Rakurai' programme. The campaign earned a Bronze in Radio & Audio Advertising (Audio Execution) and a Craft Award for planning at the 65th ACC TOKYO CREATIVITY AWARDS 2025, credited to agency Hakuhodo. Japanese tech and PR media covered it as sound-based branding powered by generative AI — proof that a snack's crunch could become an owned audio property, not just a wrapper claim.
