Bandc Basket weaves recycled milk-carton paper into washi storage baskets

A Japanese maker weaves milk-carton-recycled washi bands into storage baskets so soft and strong they replace plastic — iF Gold 2026.

The ideaMake the daily basket the sustainability argument: weave milk-carton-recycled washi bands into soft, strong storage so 'paper, not plastic' is felt in the hand.incremental

What it had to solve

Household storage is dominated by plastic boxes, while Japanese washi paper carries more than a thousand years of craft history. Bandc, a maker in Iwate Prefecture that plans, produces and sells its own products, wanted Japanese beauty born from zero and offered globally — and found its material after a basket in the barn of an old farmhouse inspired a range of contemporary baskets.

How it works

Plastic has defined the everyday storage basket, and Japan's Bandc set out to replace it with a material that could carry the argument on its own: washi paper, whose craft history spans more than a thousand years. Its paper bands descend from mizuhiki cord-making and are formed by gluing twisted cords of machine-made washi into tape, using raw material recycled from offcuts left over in milk-carton production.

The result, Bandc Basket, is a range of clean, minimal baskets whose bands are soft yet strong — water-repellent, breathable, resistant to mould and free of the splinters natural baskets often show. Every piece is finished by hand in the company's own workshop in Ōshū City, incorporating woodblock-printing techniques, and details such as baby-clothing fasteners reflect the care behind the form.

Recognition followed the concept rather than the other way around: the basket won the Good Design Award in 2019, and in 2026 it received the Gold distinction at the iF DESIGN AWARD, chosen from more than 10,000 entries. The city of Ōshū adopted it as a hometown-tax return gift, and its message — 'this is paper, not plastic' — is delivered not by a label but by the feel of the object itself.

Why it lands

  • Choosing recycled milk-carton paper made the product's ethics legible without a single printed claim.
  • Washi's strength let a paper basket compete with plastic on durability, not just sentiment.
  • Hand finishing and traditional techniques gave recycled material the tactility of a craft object.
  • Clean forms let the texture carry the story, so sustainability felt like luxury rather than compromise.

What it did

The design won Japan's Good Design Award in 2019, and in 2026 Bandc Basket received iF DESIGN AWARD Gold — the top distinction of the international German award that draws more than 10,000 entries a year. The city of Ōshū now offers the baskets as official hometown-tax return gifts, and the product carries its idea in every texture: recycled paper, not plastic, made beautiful enough for daily life.

What you can take

Make the material the message: recycled paper woven into something soft, strong and beautiful enough to replace plastic turns sustainability from a claim into a texture people feel every day.

Since then

By March 2026 Bandc Basket had taken iF DESIGN AWARD Gold alongside its earlier Good Design Award, and Ōshū City promoted the win on its official hometown-tax site, offering the baskets as return gifts. The award turned a regional Japanese maker's material experiment into an internationally cited example of replacing plastic with recycled paper in everyday goods.
