NetEase Yanxuan 'quits' Double 11 with anti-consumption PR — 1B exposures for under ¥50K

One week before Double 11, NetEase Yanxuan announces it's quitting the festival — a PR stunt against overconsumption that spins into 1B exposures.

What it had to solve

In November 2020, China's Double 11 was louder than ever while consumers and state media complained about manipulative, complex discount games. A mid-tier e-commerce player needed attention without a big media budget.

How it works

On November 4, 2020, one week before Double 11, NetEase Yanxuan posted an open letter titled 《今年双十一,我们将退出这场大戏》 ('This Double 11, we are leaving the show'), announcing it would quit the shopping festival: no complex discount games, no battle reports, no victory parties — while still promising its 'biggest subsidy of the year'.

The letter was the finale of a planned three-wave anti-consumption campaign: a film that parodied luxury-brand slogans ('To be envied, own envy'), street posters showing what consumers actually pay for brand markup, and then the announcement itself — a direct jab at rivals' 'cat-raising, team-PK' discount mechanics.

Results included 1B+ total exposures, about 30,000 organic media mentions, Weibo hot-search #4 and topic #1, and Zhihu topic #1; Yanxuan's WeChat index rose 340%, new-visitor UV grew over 30% on November 5, and its app climbed from #30 to #20 in the free-shopping chart — all on a budget under ¥50,000.

Why it lands

  • Refusal is inherently newsworthy: 'brand quits the biggest shopping festival' is a story media cannot ignore, so the letter got free distribution.
  • It named a real grievance consumers shared — complex, manipulative discount games — turning a brand position into public opinion.
  • The three-wave build (film, posters, letter) gave the stance substance, so the stunt read as conviction rather than a joke.
  • Skipping the festival's media war meant the tiny budget became part of the story — authenticity by construction.

What it did

Total exposure topped 1B with ~30,000 organic media mentions; Weibo topic ranking #1 and hot search #4, Zhihu topic #1; WeChat index rose 340%; new-visitor UV grew 30%+ on Nov 5; the app climbed from #30 to #20 in the free shopping chart — on a budget under ¥50K.

What you can take

When you can't outshout the category, oppose it: a timely public refusal grounded in a real consumer grievance makes rivals' noise your stage — and a tiny budget becomes part of the story.

Since then

The stunt became China's benchmark 'reverse-marketing' (反向营销) case and won a Bronze at 金投赏 2021 in integrated marketing. It did not fully remove Yanxuan from Double 11 — the platform still ran sales with its 'biggest subsidy' line, and many netizens called it '又当又立' (having it both ways), a debate the brand leaned into. Later Double 11s saw more brands borrow the contrarian pose, though none repeated the original impact.
